I' ll do a mini tutorial here. Remember this is just the way my .xcf is, there is probably a different and easier way to do it.
So, the process went about like this:
_Start with a dark green background.
_NEW LAYER-Solid Noise with x and y around 10 and on randomize. Then Colors-Threshhold and play around with the middle slider a little till you get a cool pattern. Color select the white and delete it. Alpha to selection and replace the black with brown.
_Same process with a NEW LAYER but fill it with a sandy color and copy the brown one, flip it once horizontally and vertically. Do an alpha to selection and delete those parts of the sandy layer. Set on COLOR.
_Same thing as last step but use orange.
_I then added the texture, shrunk and desaturated it and duplicated the layer. I set the lower one on BURN and the top one on OVERLAY, experimented with Opacitys. I guess you could skip this.
_New from Visible-Play around with Hue-Saturation. Most important here is to lower the saturation and lightness.
_New from visible-Gaussian blur by 5(I think it was 5). Set on Dodge.
_New from Visible-Unsharp Mask, played around with the settings.
_New from Visible-set on Screen 20%
_New from Visible-Black&White Gradient map-Set on Darken Only.
_Do the same step as at the beginning but use black and set on OVERLAY.
Done with the first version

For the second I just did a New From Visible and did a Tropical Colors Gradient Map. Gaussian blurred by 5-10 and set on Overlay 50%.
