I saw this on my way out to the car at our favorite fast food place. I know I looked like some silly old guy, bending over a bush at an eating establishment.
And no, the name isn't a typo. Before they were called butterflies they were called flutterbyes.

If my big fat head wasn't shading him/her it would have been a better pic.

I like butterflies more then moths (reason I believe it to be a moth is that it's much more furry then I'm use to butterflies being), but still a very nice and really well focused macro shot GMS. :)

I see those all the time around here. They're called a "Painted Lady" butterfly.

We grow fennel every year to attract these bad boys here.

gms9810: you take very nice pictures but the motives are not always that nice! i still have nightmares after those bee pictures you took - very nice colours, beautiful photography but i was jumpy and twitchy for hours after i'd seen it, convinced every new sound was a bee landing close. and now this moth closeup! (sorry, flutterbye closeup) i'm okay with butterflies and moths flying by in the summer, but i don't want to have them close and i don't like to see that fur lylejk talks about or their yuccy, spindly legs and antennae...

It's a nice picture!

Here I have tried to reduce the difference between the shaded and the illuminated area on the wings of the butterfly (original and edited):

Yeah, I could have adjusted it, I don't like to manipulate images unless it's really necessary and I didn't see it necessary in this case.

Oh, sorry. I also think it's a pretty picture and it does not need to be manipulated.
I misunderstood your post. I thought you were complaining about that shadow.

No, I was complaining about my dopeyness. I've been taking pictures since 1972, I was taught by professionals and yet I still get my shadow in the way. But I guess in my defense I couldn't stand anywhere else.

Haha, you're hilarious. I think most people would have figured you were either a photographer or you were just puking fast food. Either way = understandable.
