I found this xcf file going through my archives a few weeks back.
Did it in GIMP based on PS tutorial about 2 years ago.
Two years is a lot of time if they were invested in learning GIMP and other related stuff.

I opened it in GIMP and immediately saw where I could improve it. Said - done.

Like Esper said, lighting effect (which the later part of the tutorial involves) is not the same in PS as in GIMP. That's where I was struggling back then.
Now I achieved the right lighting in gimp by simple trick and even improved displacement map by displacing letters upon themselves before displacing the grid.

P.S. can't find that P.S. tutorial, if someone has a link, please, come out and post it.

Somewhere on this site I did find a tutorial on how to displace a circle and you had to have two layers one for the horizontal displacement and the other for the vertical, the displace maps then used a white to black gradient one going vertical and one horizontal then when applied they created a dome effect on the grid.

So I have experimented with this technique a bit and it does work well to have the two maps created one for horizontal and one for vertical.
And using a white to black gradient, the path blend script can be very handy for creating the needed gradients.

K1TesseraEna - nice looking results.

@ Esper: yes, warping would be the right word, so I changed that.
Trick is simple, He4rty got it covered pretty much, thank you he4rty.
