Well i have no authority to launch a GimpChat Contest, but i may propose one

"TWEAK THE REFERENCE" :

1) You may do a painting using as reference
2) you may use as lineart , as base for a color work
3) you may use any gimp tool or filter , even only filters and you may use mypaint
4) you may respect or modify the original :
you may turn animal and human in aliens, mythological creatures , or whatelse you may image, add or remove whatever you like
5) Whatever you do should preserve some similarities with the original
6) WIP may be be posted and disussed on ( New gallery topic to be opened )
7 )Timelinefor the final submission .... to be discussed with the mod (2 weeks ? )

2 possible "References " to tweak :

1) a sketch of a Italian landscape of the 16 century , taken on the Tiber, the river crossing Rome
(but again you may respect or turn in a imaginary landscape or what your imagination may suggest, including just use as was the "pencils" at the base of a colour paint )

Landschap met wachtende reizigers en veerpont bij de oever van de Tiber, Jan Both, 1644 - 1652
from https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/explore-t ... -BI-4211,7

Image

This is the Colosseum in Rome, as was used for centuries , seen by another dutch artist in the 17 century

You may use the first or the second "reference" ... or even mix !

Nice Rod !

I edited the first post to add another possible "Reference".
Do you think the rules are clear ?
Maybe we can pin the topic and give a timeline (i.e. 2 weeks )

Yesterday i posted a example of a (emulated ) gauche or acquarel work directly derived from a old incision
i don't repost here because didn't use the Images proposed ,but may be a example for similar tweak

message 7 here viewtopic.php?f=11&t=8356

Yes all i did was create a new gradient layer and smudge it according to colors i wanted each section to be.
You could alternatively create color spots and smudge them around also. Then the colored layer is set to a different mode. In my case DODGE mode.

Another way is to simply paint the colors in with the brush tool.
Pretty easy effect to create a colored sketch image from drawings. :)

In the first image i posted i used a gradient (red. green, blue), and filled the top layer with that gradient. Then i smudged the colors to color the image below. I did add some colors here and there also.

@Rod
your technique is very effective and fast ,but the application may need some fine tune :
the green is perfect on the tree leaves but overlap often on the branches.

Yes i did this one too fast wanting quick results. I should have taken my time and zoomed in a lot. :)
The coolest part of this effect is the top layer after the drawing is finished. If you view it by itself it looks almost like a painting. :bigthup

Wow Rod!
When I saw your painting, I thought super! :coolthup
Now seeing your technique, I loved that it is so simple! :paint
Thanks for sharing! :hi5

No problem. Glad you like the results. You can also get many different outcomes from different layer modes. :)

Another Wip not sure if the difference are evident, not only for the sketch style:
all the structure of the image was even if subtly modified by reducing the area without details
