Put this one together after following a ps tutorial, it's also one of the exercises for a glow effect at http://terra-vista.deviantart.com/. There's lots of instruction on using clipping masks, which don't appear to exist in Gimp, but I found that by using a new layer, and sometimes alpha selecting the girl layer, I was able to get most of the lighting effects right.

Here's a link to the DeviantArt version if anyone wants a look. http://fav.me/d6qbfpt All comments and thoughts welcome.

Lovely work Caz. That candle flame is really realistic.

Lovely job Caz...I don't think it is too dark One candle doesn't give a lot of light so it is relly cool.

caz: wow, lovely work! i really like the atmosphere. good thing you found a way to get around the clipping masks too - i usually end up up to my neck in layer masks :).

Very nice Caz!
I think the dark vignette adds mystery.

That's a lovely scene, very dreamy. I think it's good just the way it is.

I noticed on your DA you were talking about calibrating your monitor. Here's a website that has all kinds of calibration images. Might find it helpful.

I like it, it has an air of mystery to it. Well done. :jumpclap

Thanks for all the comments, I appreciate them :bigthup It's nice to know the image doesn't look too dark as I bought a new monitor recently and everything looks okay to me but I wasn't sure how the rest of the world was seeing my stuff.
I was a bit confused by the clipping masks at first, but using layer mask on separate layers appears to get round the lack of them in Gimp. I guess that's what a clipping mask is, a layer mask with a different name.
Thanks for the link, ek22. That site looks interesting. I will have a proper run through of all the test and see how my monitor shapes up. :cool
