Put this one together after following a ps tutorial, it's also one of the exercises for a glow effect at http://terra-vista.deviantart.com/. There's lots of instruction on using clipping masks, which don't appear to exist in Gimp, but I found that by using a new layer, and sometimes alpha selecting the girl layer, I was able to get most of the lighting effects right.

Thanks for all the comments, I appreciate them It's nice to know the image doesn't look too dark as I bought a new monitor recently and everything looks okay to me but I wasn't sure how the rest of the world was seeing my stuff.
I was a bit confused by the clipping masks at first, but using layer mask on separate layers appears to get round the lack of them in Gimp. I guess that's what a clipping mask is, a layer mask with a different name.
