Sallyanne pmed me to suggest that I start adding such resources here rather that in the current location.

Link:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=16682

So I will start to add plain white custom fonts (boring but perfect for adding colour, pattern etc), textures and examples.

To begin with here is a version of an earlier font design - Stocky - a wide capital letter font and a green abstract pattern.

Thanks for starting this thread for abstract designs. You have created very good ones. I did one custom font using "string design" I love it. I'd like to share it but in which thread I should add it? :)
This first green is very nice, too. :tyspin :coolthup

For Issa:

Short Answer:

I would place finished Custom Fonts in the thread where you have always done - they are just custom fonts with an abstract design after all.

Long Answer:

I began doing things this way because I struggle to upload any file more than just over 1 Mb in size and splitting files up to re-assemble with open as layers is a pain for folk. I normally tend to work bigger, at 1000 px layer height for most custom font projects, and then scale down.

An example of the sizes involved using Chunky Plain Circled consisting of 65 characters (i.e. capitals, numbers and some punctuation) and with a layer height of 600 px:

Plain white - 1.865 Mb (compresses to 209 kb with 7Z)
Green pattern added to plain white - 10.023 Mb (compresses to 3.872 Mb with 7Z)
Green pattern + Shine added to plain white - 13.635Mb (compresses to 6.814 Mb with 7Z)

So I think that this thread is the one to use for uploading resources for making the abstract custom fonts but to use the old thread (Custom-Font-XCF-Files) for uploading the finished product as a custom xcf file.

Issa: Just saw your beautiful font on GimpLearn. Way-to-go as they say!

It's strange how some of the images I've tried, that have looked very good (at least to me) on their own, have given me disappointing results when applied to a custom font. This image didn't seem very good at all, to me, but gave a much better custom font look when given the treatment. Perhaps it's all in the shine.

Sometimes just adjusting the size of the image/layer that you are copying the colours/pattern from can make a lot of difference to the end result of your target font face. I made an abstract from coloured quadrilaterals but was disapponted with the outcome - when I scaled the size to match the height of the custom font layers I was much happier with the result.

Before scaling:

and after scaling.

RennysNiche use to be a cool site for such alphabet designs, but they've been gone for over a decade now. Looks like someone recently bought the name (don't really bother to click there though). Anyway, with the help of the wayback machine, you can still visit the site as is. Some of the zip links still work (click Alphabet on left side pane and then browse till happy). :)

Not used the chisel feature for a while - perhaps I need therapy to withdraw from an overuse of shine...

I have a set of images that I use to add texture to font face images i.e. adding the texture layer below the image layer and setting that layer mode to multiply (or whatever mode suits a given purpose) - almost like underpainting before painting the image.

A couple more textures in the coloured string theme. They don't look much but they do produce nice results as a font face...
