[font=Comic Sans MS][font=cursive]So I can't find my post where I was asking for help in getting the fonts I downloaded to show up in my Gimp.
I know to the Gimp pros on here what I'm sharing will seem like I'm preaching to the choir director", lol....but for the amateur's or the one's left scratching their heads this is for you.
I wanted to share with you here that I got the problem solved....along with an issue of my brushes disappearing.
Well disaster averted thanks to an awesome member here by the name of "ofnuts" who suggested that I...
1. Open the Program
2. Go to Edit>Preferences>Folders
3. Choose either "Fonts" (or Brushes...or whatever you're trying to transfer to)
4. Look at what/where Gimp is saying the fonts/brushes/etc. are being stored.
5. Then going into your downloads on your computer choose the file you want and extract them and choose where they go in the "Browse" box.

I chose when extracting the fonts to place them here:
C:\ProgramFiles\Gimp2\share\gimp\2.0\fonts

(now side note ....I didn't see a folder for fonts under "2.0" so I made one. So I am going to safely assume this is probably ok to do so with other folders you don't see. But I could be wrong ....so the pro's out there feel free to chime in and help out.)

Anyway, hope this is really helpful. And thank you again to the member "ofnuts" for all your help.

Any type of recourse,
which a user would add to Gimp.
The most favorable action.
Would be to place them into the appropriate corresponding Gimp User Folder.

For instance,
such resources as,
Brushes,
Patterns,
Gradients,
Scripts,
Fonts,
et cetera...
would go into the Gimp User folders.
This is where I place any recourse,
that I wish to add to my Gimp.

The path to my Gimp User Fonts Folder is,
"C:\Users\Wallace\.gimp-2.8\fonts".

Yes I forgot two things.....
I guess it also depends on who else might be using your computer.

Alot of people, such as yourself, mention putting it in C:\Users\........\
For myself I am the only user ...sorry that I forgot to mention that.

When I look into where my stuff is placed I have one of two options:
C:\Users\store\.gimp-2.8\brushes (or fonts, etc.)
My computer doesn't have names of others because I am the only one using it so it just says "store".

The other option is (as I mentioned in the original post):
C:\ProgramFiles\GIMP2\share\gimp\2.0\brushes (fonts, etc.)

I chose the second option and it worked perfectly. I chose it because of it saying "share"....like shared files....aka downloaded files is how I reasoned it out.
Call it a lucky guess I guess, lol, that it did.

Sure glad it did.
But anytime I discover something after plenty of frustrating trial and error I like to share it....save others from ample amounts of hair loss, lol.

Thank you for jumping in and helping out. Kudos!

The main reason for placing Resources in your user folder as above is that if you update or reload gimp they will still be there.
If you put them in Gimps folders they will be deleted :bawl

Your previous post is here.

There are several differences between:
  1. Your files in C:\Users\store\.gimp-2.8\brushes (or fonts, etc.)
  2. System files in C:\ProgramFiles\GIMP2\share\gimp\2.0\brushes (fonts, etc.)

  • In a decently protected system, you have to be admin to update things in (2) (and, of course in a decently protected system, you have a plain userid for most uses, and use admin userids sparingly)
  • The directories in (2) can be totally erased by a reinstall.
  • Backups usually focus on the user directories and may not backup software installation in "C:\Program files", so things in (1) are much more likely to be backed up

So the only advantage of (2) is that since it it considered read-only by Gimp, you won't be able to alter add-ons that you keep there.

On Windows,
the Gimp User Profile is located at,
"C:\Users\{your_id}\.gimp-2.8".

As per gimp.org's own documentation,
"Your GIMP Profile and You by Ofnuts".

Well my head is spinning a bit over here with all this info but I think I got the gist of it.
Looks like I stand very well corrected and praise is in order once again.
I will be transferring everything over to the proper area as suggested....tomorrow.... because this lady is beat tired.

But one quick question for you pro's .....
I have a pretty big .xcf file (2346 x 3942 pixels) that has over 40 layers at the moment to it. I will be needing to downsize it and keep all the detailed quality to it once printing time comes along.

I will be needing to make either 3 x 5 cards or 4 x 6's. They're my daughter's wedding/save the date invites.

I know about when scaling an image down you can choose from the drop down menu between pixels, inches, centimeters, etc. But when I do choose to scale down to either of the sizes above all the quality is lost....and so distorted. Yeah I shrieked when I saw that, lol.

So any suggestions?

Thank you again and Goodnight!

Oh My Gosh! I deserve a medal....or at least to add another color in my "Mother of the Bride" superhero cape....lol. :clap

I figured out how to fix the scaling problem all by myself....by going into the resolution.
Duh!!!

I played around until I got the size down to 3.045 x 5.103 inches and the X and Y resolution I set to 580.

And now I can actually go to bed and not feel like the last 24 hours of working on this has been an epic failure.

Night y'all ! :hi5

A 3 x 5 inch card,
with a DPI of 300.
Would be a 1500 x 900 pixel canvas.
A 4 x 6 inch card using the same DPI.
Would have a canvas of 1800 x 1200.

DPI (Dots Per Inch) is important,
when creating an image for printing.

Also take into consideration for any borders or bleed-over when printing.
Adding perhaps 100 pixels to the width and height of the canvas might be needed.
