A new custom font thread available and open for all...

Many of my own custom fonts exceed the filesize limit here on GimpChat but if you download the ones that have been zipped and split into smaller chunks you can extract them and re-asemble them using File>>Open as Layers... or you can download and use my Stitcher plug-in to do the job for you...



(Edit to update Stitcher 9th September 2023 to version 0.2b to fix a bug that affected users of non-English languages.)

Here is another plug-in that will re-assemble custom fonts in a different way - aimed mainly at those which contain accented characters. It cannot be used with files intended to be used with Stitcher. Details will follow when the first de-assembled custom font is added later in the thread. Now updated to Version 02.

If you have not yet used Stitcher (post #1) some quick instructions...

Assuming that you have put the Stitcher plug-in in your user plug-ins folder...

1. Create a work folder on your machine.
2. Extract the two custom font xcf files and place them in your folder.
3. Open the first file in Gimp.
4. Call up the Stitcher dialog from its menu location:

Filters>>Custom Fonts>> Utility Tools>>Custom Font File Stitcher v 02…

5. Click on 'OK'.
6. Save the re-assembled file to its final location.

What a beautiful beast...



I wondered about the image size of this beautiful custom font P. Unless, of course, you need that size for a particular outcome.

I tend to go smaller at 600 px height: This would have given a filesize of about 17.3MB compared with almost 50MB for a height of the original 1052 px.

This one just squeaked in when compressed...

OK it's just me but when I shrink down a font to fit a few downloads, it hurts me

I made them around 2000-3000 pixels,
Few reasons about this, (just my way of thinking)
One reason is "details" inside the font, nowadays with all the 4k things (and 8k already showing up with TVs), fonts bellow 1000 pixels are too "small" IMVHO,

A good example could be @Gimper66, it's not uncommon that he uses large font size like over there > viewtopic.php?f=11&t=13896&start=2900#p272745 which is above 800px.
Another thing I am thinking about, could be perennity, when looking at the first Custom fonts which were an average size of around 100 - 300 pixels, as of today they are hardly usable in many cases. Sadly we cannot download them anymore, there was some gems in there that I did regret to not have downloaded before

I do take your point Patrice - perhaps, now that Splitter appears to do the job, I will bump up to join you.

Perhaps a present to myself of a bigger harddisk for my birthday?

I have copies of all my own custom fonts and the base that they are derived from; so reworking them at a bigger size is an option.

Thought I would revisit the idea of producing larger custom fonts after a conversation here with PixLab.

So looking at 1000 px in image height this version is 17.8 MB uncompressed and at a height of 600 px it would come out at 11.5 MB. To assess the number of compressed files required for uploading here in GimpChat I first compressed the full file; this became 9.8 MB and so I judged that 2 smaller files would fit my needs i.e neither should exceed the 6 Mb limit.

Use Stitcher (post #1) to assemble the two custom font files...

Wow these fonts are works of art. I like the lightening and the patches font.
Also the python stitcher script is a good way to get around the GC upload limit.

I've found the more 'artistic' the font the less text you can use with it (in message images). This is a contradiction - text and fonts evolved to carry information but when the text and font become the information it leaves the phrases in a support role
