One of the problems of uploading larger custom font files here on GC is the filesize limit of 6Mb (excuse me if I have said this before).

To get round this I have, in the past, uploaded part custom font files which the downloader has to open and fit together using Gimp's 'Open as Layers...' from the File menu.

I have a plug-in that will stitch custom font files, that live in the same folder, together. It works on Windows but I cannot test it with other operating systems. Before I commit to a new thread that contains larger custom font file resources, I wondered if someone with a different OS would give it a try and let me know if it works for them.

The custom font is over 15Mb uncompressed and over 8Mb when compressed:

It comes as two compressed files.

The first is a compressed folder containing the Custom Font File Stitcher plug-in, the custom font parent file and the above folder thumbnail image png.

Stipples-Base.7z [3.95 MiB]
Downloaded 2269 times

The second compressed file contains the custom font child file - ie the one to be added to the parent file.

Attachment:
Happy-Donuts_Caps_Striples_1.7z [3.88 MiB]
Downloaded 2148 times

Download the two compressed files.

Create a folder on your machine - give it a suitable name - and extract the resources, copy the stitcher plug-in into your user plug-in folder and the custom font resources into the newly created folder.

Instructions for using Custom Font File Stitcher in the next post.

When you have installed the plug-in fire up Gimp.

Open the parent custom font file 'Happy-Donuts_Caps_Striples.xcf' from the File menu:

File>>Open...

and navigate to the file location.

After the file has loaded and you can see the custom font layers in the layer stack, call up the plug-in from its location:

Filters>Custom Fonts>Constructing Tools>Custom Font File Stitcher...

Click on 'OK' and that should be it. If it works then great - otherwise boo-hoo.

Save the new version of the custom font file - you can just overwrite the old version - and delete the other files that you no longer need. (Child files have a number appended to the parent name.)

An example of how the custom font should look.

Tried on Linux Mint 20.1 GIMP 2.10.28 PPA Install:
Got an error:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpfu.py", line 740, in response
    dialog.res = run_script(params)
  File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpfu.py", line 361, in run_script
    return apply(function, params)
  File "/home/xxx/.config/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins/Custom_Font_File_Stitcher.py", line 105, in do_stuff
    for file in os.listdir(folder_info):
OSError: [Errno 2] Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden: '/tmp/Happy-Donuts_Caps_Striples.xc'

Last Line: The filename says .xc instead of .xcf
Is that where it goes wrong?
PS.: Files were put into location:
/tmp which of course exists.

Thanks for the feedback Nelo...
Looks like a difference in OS.

if both extracted files load in Gimp without problem than it may be the way that a different OS handles that particular call.

Thanks again Nelo...
Shame since it all works perfectly on my machine in Windows.
Was going to provide the files in separate zip archives rather than 7z archives in the vain hope that it was a decompression issue.

Same here, same problem, I'm on Ubuntu-MATE 20.04 - GIMP 2.10.32, PPA from Panda Jim
I did put the 2 xcf in the same folder (the one I used to open the first xcf (written in the big screenshot)

It says ".xc" ... should not be ".xcf"? (all your files for this test have a proper .xcf ;) )

Thanks for your feedback PixLab.
Working on a second version to avoid using oslibdir.

If any windows users have tried this trial version out I would be interested to learn if they hace experienced any error or not.

O my...,
Skinnyhouse, I while reading your answer I got an horrible thought... :shock:

Stitching is nice when downloading, but for people participating and/or who want to export their custom fonts to GC (here comes the horrible thought) > why not doing a xcf "splitter" as well?
Something like splitting the layers stack in 3 or 4 or more parts/groups, then "auto" export each part/group as same_name[].xcf, thus ready to upload in a click
Maybe all in the same script.py with an option like > "do you want to split" or "do you want to stitch"?

That was just a though :mrgreen:

In all case huge thank you for everything you're doing for Custom fonts :clap :tyspin
