A place to add custom fonts for 2024 – and Happy New Custom Fonting to everyone.
If you are new to the idea of custom fonts and have just found your way here I have provided a little information at the end of this post.
I have updated the Stitcher plug_in for re-assembling custom font files that have been split into smaller parts. It works with earlier versions of Splitter.

Information for new custom fonters
Custom fonts are a way of transforming plain or coloured text by adding effects, light and texture to the characters that you use in your Gimp creations.
Custom font files only work in Gimp: A file consists of a set of layers - one layer is used to display one character. The file may also contain a set of kerning paths that can be used to determine the spacing (kerning) between characters.
The image below shows unkerned and kerned text.
You will need a plug-in or filter to display the characters in Gimp. Search Gimp Scripts and Plugins
If you are interested in making your own custom fonts, there are plug-ins to make custom fonts from ordinary fonts or you can create your own custom fonts from scratch using Gimp. If you use an existing font make sure that the font is free to use both for personal and commercial use. Some fonts download with a license in a compressed bundle but there are many others that come without any documentation. Do your best to find out if the author of the original font has imposed any restrictions on the use of his/her fonts. I am extremely grateful to those who make their fonts freely available.
Some custom fonts need to be unzipped after download, because of the filesize limit of 6MB here on GimpChat. Some custom fonts are available with more than one file of characters and need to be re-assembled after downloading and unzipping. This can be done by using the ‘Open as Layers...’ dialog from the ‘File’ menu option in Gimp or you can use the Stitcher plug-in (now at version 0.3) to do this for you.
