Palettes are used primarily to distinguish the best color schemes. I wish I had my workbook in PDF format, I'd post it, but the closest I can find online that speaks of what I am referring to is here:

The result would be our palette, and those paint colors would be used on our actual palette. In a graphics program, you can obtain this same concept by choosing the color palette you create in place of the color wheel or GIMP default color wheel when choosing foreground or background colors.
