First off, I'd like to thank everyone who submitted a banner so far. I see this as a continuing effort so members can submit a banner or multiple banners, at any time.

I know I did a poor job of explaining how the submitted banner would integrate into the website so I want to take another shot at it.

The banner area of the website is exactly 930x200.

Image

It's easy to create a banner that will overlay properly with that background to integrate seamlessly into the website.

Here is an XCF which contains only the elements that make up the background and divider. It can be used as a starting point for your banners. You can just leave the background transparent and use the background in the template to see what it will look like when it's posted. The bottom divider is required and needs to stay fixed in it's position.

You can think "out of the box" with this design options and overhang the dividers, as is done with Wilber's paintbrush in the original GC banner. ;)

Please post any problems, questions, suggestions and updated banners back to this thread. I'll get any updated or additional banners posted right up on the test theme for viewing. :bigthup

oh barbie, i'm so ashamed now! so sorry for using that stupid expression, i won't do it again. when i meet new people i certainly don't assume they're stupid just because of their haircolour and since i live in a country where fair hair dominates the picture i must have met hundreds of blondes who are brilliant thinkers. i consider myself properly told off for using prejudicial expressions and i hope you'll not judge me by that post!

Just to have some fun: :)

I reduced the gif size (optimizing) created with GIMP using "gifsicle" software on GNU/Linux:

gifsicle -O input.gif > output.gif

That's clever, YAFU. I have it up in rotation with the test theme.

Rod, at this point, we can rotate png, jpg and gif (can add others) but we do have to be careful with animated gifs. They can have large file sizes and be distracting, and sometimes flat out annoying. :hehe

I have not much experience making animations, so thanks :)

By the way, does anyone know why when saving as gif with GIMP gradient color does not look good?

It's because the color depth is limited to 8 bits when using gifs. While it is possible to achieve more than 256 colors, 8 bits is the standard color depth for .gif. APNG supports animations at higher color depths but not all browsers support APNG, and the file sizes are so large that it's not really practical just yet, at least for most of my applications.

Hi Tux I went with this theme because ever since I started with Gimp , the stupid peppers have been in the brush repository and they are most useless brush ever. I have never found a use for them but they are immediately identified with Gimp! The sparkle brush is useful sometimes and again has always been with Gimp as a feature brush

Thanks for the explanation GnuTux.
I wonder why can not be succeed a lossy image format for animation, as jpg's image sequences.

Thanks 2-ton!

@rdgracer71, You can use as a template the xcf file posted in the first post. I guess the only limitation is that the resulting file does not take up much disk space.

New version, the text is pulled up to give it more continuity:
