I use Avidemux regularly without issue. MPEG files from other sources are normally the problem it's garbage in, even more garbage out. You have to check for errors before you edit. Video players will automatically resync a bad quality MPEG, a video editor doesn't.
BTW, I agree VirtualDub is great, once you know how to use it.
