When I saw Revisiting the Case of the Wedding Photographer Threatened with a $300,000 Lawsuit I remembered reading about the original story. Although this follow up has lessons for independent contractors (photographers, designers, etc.), the human nature angle makes it an interesting read for anyone.

Here's a clip of the beginning of the article that includes a link to the backstory.

A couple years ago, I read a story about a Washington wedding photographer that was threatened with a $300,000 lawsuit by an ex-client. The story then seemed to drop out of sight. Sometime thereafter, I decided to put on my investigative reporter mustache and do some sleuthing. Was the threat real? Did a lawsuit actually get filed? If so, what was the result?

Always have a written contract, when providing any kind of service to anyone.

Hands down the best thing about this case is the title:

Poon v. Tang

I wish I was making this up...

Not to mention the "Honey vs. Pot" case.

I'm so glad that the photographer won. Whatta fiasco. You wonder why they sued him.

With "Dude" being a lawyer and all, you think he would have thought this through a bit. The article makes a good point about how photographers take X amount of pictures, but only submit Y to the client.

Glad it turned out on a positive note. Even with a bit of advice for the future.

It’s really nice to read such a dramatic story. If it is true then I want to congratulate you that finally you won the case.

Great story written by a hilarious writer! It's unbelievable that anybody - especially a lawyer could have written such a horrifying letter. In England, a letter like that would probably amount to harassment and you might even add threatening behaviour to the pot. I'm so glad the photographer won!
