Looks like a mouse Molly. I think OMG or Graechan may be able to answer that one, or any other Aussies here.
Only name/picture I found that looked like it was a long tailed mouse.

I think the person holding it better get his fingers looked after, The one looked like it was bleeding all around the edges. It is cute and doesn't look like a mouse to me cuz they aren't cute to me. :teeth

Check this page out. It might be a pigmy possum. http://australian-animals.net/ I couldn't get a close up look at it.

Another page gave me this (http://animalworld.tumblr.com/post/4392 ... olrunnings)
SOUTHWESTERN PYGMY-POSSUM (Cercatetus concinnus) - ©Ray Dayman

The Southwestern Pygmy-possum is an Australian marsupial, commomly called the Western Possum or the Mundarda. It is a fawn-coloured creature no bigger than a kiwi fruit. Weighing an average of only 13 grams, this nocturnal marsupial has a short pointed snout, large forward directed eyes and big ears. It is thought to eat a diet of pollen, nectar, spiders and insects. Unlike its grey relatives, it is coloured a bright cinnamon colour. It is nocturnal.

These pictures definitely confirm it's a pygmy possum. In fact, your picture is among them, sallyanne.

sallyanne: wow, that really is most ridiculously cute! i want to cuddle it NOW! :cute but... just a moment; wait now - exactly how do i know it doesn't want to kill me?! i mean, maybe it goes around all day toying with plans of murdering innocent swedish gimp chatters, it just lacks the physical possibilities of realising their plans?

erisian: watch it closely! is it really cuter than me? are you sure that's what you wanted to say?! :hoh

oregonian: oh dear! be careful what you post! erisian will be pestering me about getting a baby hedgehog now - he has an unfortunate thign for hedgehogs...

molly:  i don't think the hedgehog mummys spend too much time potty training their little ones.

They are cute and so smaaal. *___*

But to be honest I think that (on average, obviously) a bite from a mammal is probably worse than one from a insect or arachnid. Don't trust the cuteness. :P

Drats, I guess I won't be getting one then, AnMal. My two cats would probably eat them anyway.

Australia has many tiny mammals that because of there size were not wiped out by mans encroachment over this continent

Is that a Australian sugar glider Sallyanne? They sell them as pets here and give them the moniker of pocket pet. They sell them at the mall around 3 or 4 times a year, especially during the Christmas season. Very expensive for a mouse looking creature. lolol

:)

Lyle The sugar glider is not considered endangered, though it is a protected native Australian species
and as a conservationist it saddens me to hear they are for sale as a novelty

Maybe so Graechan, but at around $500 a piece, they don't sell too many. Not sure how they got to sell them here in the US. I may also have been wrong since I went to the website just now and they call them sugar bears, but they look an awful lot a like and they are from the same area (Australia/New Guinea). Trust me; I really don't like the idea of these as pets either since they look so fragile to me and don't like seeing any animal caged (though have to admit, when I was a kid, I had pet gerbils. lol). :)

Anyway, found a non-commercial site about these little creatures:
