I want to create some links on my desktop in Fedora 21 Mate desktop. Suppose I want a link to Gimp Chat, how would I go about that? Thanks

Open Gimp Chat with Firefox
Click right mouse button over bookmarks (star)
Select Save as... (I tried it with all files at the bottom options, it works)
Then you have to get a .html file in your desktop.
I think that may be possible add an icon (use propierties menu by clicking over html icon)

I am not on fedora but this sounds like it makes sense.
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/64212/how-can-i-shortcut-a-website-into-an-application/

on windows, i did something similar and it worked.
I just made a short cut to firefox
then right clicked and edited properties and added http://gimpchat.com after quoted string in target
so that my target became
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" http://gimpchat.com
and it worked. so i imagine the above link would also work for fedora.
not sure if you can edit properties in fedora or not or you have to text edit it.

What you need is a desktop file something.desktop which is a plain text file along the lines of this
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Name=Gimpchat
Exec=firefox http://www.gimpchat.com
Icon=firefox

It should be set as executable and goes in your home folder ~/Desktop

something like this

Rich that may work but if you are using FF you can just pull the little icon out onto your desktop and it will create a url to gimp chat

Apparently, it doesn't work with Chrome

Molly:
I use Firefox (or Iceweasel) as default. Chromiun (not Chrome) and Qupzilla also.

Just in case anyone gets confused.

I did not pull anything onto the desktop.

Creating a .desktop file is real basic linux, if you have some shell that does it for you great, but you still end up with a .desktop file.

The icon depends on you, a quick demo and I kept the Firefox icon. Make an icon and put the full path to it in the icon= line in the .desktop file.

I used Firefox (had to install it) as I thought that was the browser being used. The same format is used for any application that will run.
