I just added the Ultimate Points extension on my forum.
And I love the extension so much I donated $5 EUR to the guy(s) that wrote it.

I set it so that new registered members automatically get 50 points so they can spend on download scripts/resource files(that isn't an image) (10 points per download).
At first, the extension just take away your 10 points when you download a file.
I thought it would be more fun to make it so that the poster of the attachment gets those 10 points.
So after some digging around, i was able to add this functionality with 2 lines of code (mostly cut and paste).

So now, if you share .zip files like of scripts/or like a resource like a custom font file, you can get (virtually) rich over time as members spend points to download those resources...

I think it's a freakn great extension and I am in love with it right now.
Of course you can earn points by simply doing your normal forum activities like posting.

There are other things too like opening bank account and depositing money into it to earn savings interest, and buy lottery tickets to win the jackpot.

I know it isn't GIMP related, but i think it's a great addition to indicate member's participation over time based on how much virtual dollars/points you have.

Also it's good too I was thinking like if you ask questions and get the help you wanted, you can always donate some virtual points to the answerer to show some virtual appreciation.

I wish i knew about this extension earlier.

Think of all the custom-fonts that have been created.
The creator(s) could be virtually super wealthy. hehe

Wallace,
you have 70 points/virtual dollars because I was testing the rewarding the poster's per download and i tested it twice on your post for Pat625 (so you gained 20 points 10/per download).
hehehe you're becoming more wealthy Wallace.

So, now on gimplearn, you must be registered, logged in and have points to download.
If you are not logged in, or don't have points, you can not download.
Correct?

That's an interesting idea.
However,
does this mean that people would need to have points available,
in order to download something?

In other words,
if you have no points, no downloading files for you?

yeah but it's easy to get points
50 points given on new registrations
and when you post you get 0.1 point per word, 0.01 per character..so if you're just doing normal activities you should earn points fine.

That is correct.
You can view images, images are not considered downloads.
I think it's a fun way to virtually credit the contributors of uploaded files/content.

Thank you,
I will consider if I wish to keep any meager contributions that I made for the public on gimplearn or not.
I'm not much of one for restrictions.

It's only for fun after all everything is free.
Nothing says you can't download one of the content on there and share it elsewhere without restriction...hehehe but while you're there in GIMP learn downloads give the contributors some virtual wealth.

That may be how you see it.
I do not see it that way.
You are restricting download to registered user who is logged in and has points.
That is how I see it.
It is a restriction.

Limiting download (for non-registered) broke my GPL heart.

Okay so after thinking about it. I think you're right.
So I commented out the code that subtract points from users so any one can download now.
So restriction is removed.
However it still credit the contributor to make them virtual wealthy (that is ultimately what i wanted).

Tin - I agree with MareroQ and Animicule; I also just tried a test earlier of not logging on and attempting to download (my own upload) some glass brushes and got the message "You need more Points in order to download this attachment"!

I'm glad that the restrictions are now eliminated - I'm always happy to share my uploads freely. :)

Just did some final testing
found a bug because it was checking for registered user.
so i commented that out and now any user can just download and it'll still make contributors richer.
I tested it when i was logged out on Wallace's post.
So Wallace is even richer now heeheh

MareroQ - Hopefully now that restriction is lifted so downloads opened to all users, your GPL heart is healed. (it'll still make the contributor virtually 10 points richer, that is what i ultimately wanted).
OMG - sorry about that experience you had... now it's all good and proper.
animicule - Thank you for expression your thoughts so that i could implement it to what people can use it to their liking.

Actually I have a better compromise...
For users who aren't logged in, or don't have enough points, i'll still let them download but no points rewarded or taken away.

If however, a user is logged in and has enough points it'll take 10 points and give it to contributor.

This makes the point system has more value for those that do participate.

:hehe only because if i click on my own post it takes away 10 points from me and then give me 10 points so i don't see any change otherwise i would test on my own post to make myself a little wealthier
