I came across this article through a GIMP Facebook Group. Apparently the name GIMP has offended some people and they want it changed.

I believe there are quite a few more marketable names out there than GIMP. I personally have no problem at all with the name GIMP, but I also wouldn't have a problem if its name would be altered into something more market friendly.

I'm sorry some people are,
or might be offended.
However,
that's just Image too bad.

To quote Shakespeare "PC or not PC that is the question". Personally, I agree with Cecilia and Wallace.

We need to be offended by everything!
Thats the way the world is now
Gimp stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program
I just hope the programmers dont cave in to this

Surely a different name would cause confusion. It's not just about new users adopting the change when they choose what version to use, there is also the vast catalogue of information, resources and tutorials online that are found using the word Gimp. Are the Glimpse users not going to search for them? Will they not want to join the forums with gimp in the name? So regardless they are going to know they are using Gimp and will be using that term.

To me, the name GIMP is a much more user friendly name, than its given name, GNU Image Manipulation Program and it sounds better. Who wants to keep saying GNU Image Manipulation Program? Soon it starts sounding like a tongue twister.

Over the years, I've heard the name change arguments in ad nauseam. My answer to this then and now is keep GIMP and let the PC folk be offended; don't care. :)

Glimpse? Gimme a break, I need to halt for a thorough scrutiny....
I think it would be a bad shot. Did the person who suggested this, thought what kind of a confusion name change would create after so long time? The reasoning is far-fetched, world is full of weird brand, product and application names. GIMP is fine.
Glimpse would maybe fit for image viewer or screen capture program.

Why change the name? You cannot please all the people all the time and it will only create confusion anyway. I like the name. It should stay as it is. Mike you a laugh

haha, I thought about that too, but spelled it Glimpschat.
Another bad thing would be that all gimpers would become glimpsers.

I'm calling it GIMP.

Keep it as GIMP. That is the name. I like change as long as it improves something. Changing it now gives no advantages and gives the big disadvantage of much confusion.
