Anyone know of a good free open source file renamer that can handle renaming files in bulk? The MS store has one which I uninstalled quickly because it was confusing to use.

I use "Bulk Rename Utility".
I find it excellent.

The problem with that one is, that it's not open source and it's only available for Windows.

It's free for personal use even if not open source, that's enough if you don't use Gimp for commercial uses.

For Windows users always worth checking out www.portablefreeware.com and the section for renamers https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?sc=45 All sorts there, from simple to complicated.

Whatever you get, the important bits: Some sort of preview to check the result. An undo (providing you have not committed the changes).

This in Win 10, wildrename: https://i.imgur.com/OFVbEQl.jpg Snags: only one wildcard so either *.* (everything) or *.xyz (only files with xyz extension) but it does save procedures.

Not many single application for all operating systems. In linux I use gprename: https://i.imgur.com/UAlUjfb.jpg If I do a search for equivalents, A list showing what is free, and applicable operating systems https://alternativeto.net/software/renamer/

Maybe one there to suit your requirements.

I don't use gimp for commercial use. I checked out Bulk Rename Utility and I'm not a fan of it.

What kind of renaming do you have in mind? Assign sequence numbers? Rename from some image criterion (size, date taken...)?

Assign sequence numbers should do the trick. I use vlc media player to take images from dvds or video files and their numbering sequences is too much.. they start with 5 digits right off the bat and that is with either png or jpg format.

I have attached an example.

You need only...a bit of patience, and you will find a lot of interesting features.
It can be used for many renaming purposes.
At the beginning it seems too complex, but as long as you use it you'll find what you need.
Just an opinion of one who uses it since years.

SMPlayer can do sequence numbering with 3 digits.
Go to options/preferences/general. In the template field type %03n (for 3 digits). Screenshot key is S.
Couldn't find a way in VLC.

I had SM Player for a while. I deleted it because I couldn't get it to act as my default player but I did like the way they took screenshots.

Has anyone heard of or used File Menu Tools? Is it virus free and safe to download? I tried looking for a portable version but the site: https://www.lopesoft.com/index.php/en/d ... enu-tools# doesn't list one. Also, the free version has its limitations.
