Check out link below. In the thread, someone pointed out to the plugin called Magiceye (GIMP) which I use to create these. It's been a while and I've not tested the plugin with the latest GIMP but my bet is it still works. :)

Tested stereograph.exe (v1.5) on 2.10.8. It works but the sliders are invisible in dark theme, in light theme they show up.
Never got magiceye to work with 2.8 and I still don't know how to get it to work.

The plugin still works fine in 2.10, Nidhogg. You have to understand that your depthmap target has to be a true grayscale image (not RGB). :)

Curious character for the first and second scares me! :)
I have several books of stereograms because I like a lot but my friends can not see them .. Bizarre!

Depthmap is greyscale (image->mode:greyscale). Then I created another image, a pattern strip.
Changed back to depthmap and ran magiceye, throws a pop-up window with multiple errors and the plugin window.
Clicking OK does not do anything except:
Too many error messages!
Messages are redirected to stderr

What's the difference with magiceye and stereograph?
To me it looks stereograph is more advanced.

Yes; I get the error dialog but the plugin still completes the operation Nidhogg. I do wish someone would compile the plugin for GIMP 2.10x compatibility, but had the same issue with 2.8x as I recall (dialog box that is). It is an old plugin. :)

I use to physically place a finger for each eye and force them to parallel, but now I don't have to do this. Some folk just cannot figure it out, level-0. Glad I'm not one of those people. :)

I went to an orthoptist once and looking at such images was part of the treatment. This is a very good way to force your eyes to rest...

A few months or so ago, I was experimenting with reversible deformations and just got a brain fart which led to this wavy form of stereogram. :)

I can never see them either, even after I am shown the picture and know what to look for. I've tried with my glasses and without. Does not work. My husband can find the pic almost instantly, frustrating!

Pat, you look by letting your eyes go into the dream, without forcing, you make the blur (as with filters "blur") ;) , you let yourself go dreaming and suddenly you see! :)

great find and post level_0 :tyspin

Its over 20 years since I last saw one of these and at first couldn't remember how to look, got it now. I stare but force my eyes to see double, like when you gently press the sides of your eyes with your fingers

lylejk, the dragon sent a shiver down my spine, minded me of a film that terrified me as a kid 'Night of the Demon'

Pat625, some people can't see them, like my mother who has a lazy eye, explanations in this link which is a good read
