Life can be a struggle with so many User IDs and Passwords to remember. That browsers now save this for us can be a real benefit.

That is until a Firefox update wiped it all away, blank, zilch nothing there any more and it is the second time it has happened .... so now both I and my wife have to reconstruct a couple of hundred sets of IDs/Passwords. Also Firefox will now not connect to half a dozen favourite sites, like my coffee bean supplier, coming up with crazy warning messages. Other browsers connect OK.

Luckily, I had all my IDs and passwords recorded as back up in a spreadsheet, so now its bye bye Firefox, hello Vivaldi and Chrome.

Just wanted to vent spleen and get it out of my system ... so bl..dy angry about it.

That's a bummer.
Got the update, opened the application menu from right upper corner and clicked passwords.
Typed my master password, all seems to be ok.

I save my FF passwords on a regular basis, just in case something happens (might not be the FF fault but the OS, though)...

Click on the menu button (the burger) to open the menu panel:
Click Logins and Passwords.

A new Window opens...
Click the Firefox Lockwise menu (the three dots on the top right), then click Export Logins….

A dialog box will appear... Export -> it will be saved as CSV (LibreOffice - Calc)

As with any data this shows how important backups are.

With passwords it's a good idea to use a password manager and store on a usb.

KeePass portable is open sorce and data is encrypted. Just don't forget the master password, there is no back door.

I'm using Firefox 89 on Xubuntu. If I 'clear history' I see this:

So I don't tick Active Logins which are only sites you are always logged into.

I never let any browser save passwords, I never was comfortable with that.

No user error, no clearing of history. Booted the PC, clicked FF shortcut and it started an apparently major update screaming "Wake up to a brand new Firefox". Anyway Vivaldi is now my default browser, Chrome is my wife's default browser.

Reason I am with Chrome now OMG. Apparently all your stuff is saved online.
Before I went over to a new computer 3 years ago a daughter advised me to go over. I was on FireFox before.

So I don't tick Active Logins which are only sites you are always logged into.

This doesn't affect saved passwords in any way. I have everything ticked ON in the clear history.
Next time I boot I just use the master password to open the saved passwords.
That is if I happen to use any of those sites in that session.

Don't see any security issue having some random forum passwords, like GC saved in the browser.
I don't save any paysite passwords like Amazon or PayPal though, even you have the double security with a connected phone nowadays.

Last time I changed phone, I almost screwed up with my bank because the phone needs to be paired with the bank account,
before you can continue using it.

I think OMG's password file might have been corrupted, at least that was the problem when it happened few years ago.

Good point from PixLab also, backup backup backup. Or you will regret when your HDD dies!

I didn't see it coming and it didn't give me the option to say no unless it's nearly invisible because of the new insipid colour.

I recently switched form Google Chrome to Brave.
I was unhappy with the way Chrome handled some things,
especially the the way it handled YouTube.
Been using Brave for about 2 months now and do believe it has some advantages over Chrome or FireFox.

Looks like Firefox created a new profile without telling you. Thats a big mistake. On Linux it asked me to choose a theme which didn't happen before but it works perfectly.

I didn't have a problem with the new version of Firefox

Like racer-x,and I make PC backups every week on 2 external hard drives and my passwords are saved on a file saved on external hard drive and USB sticks.
Back in the days when I didn't know how to make PC backups, I backed up my Firefox profile every week and it came in handy several times.

There was a time where firefox srewed up things often for me ... it's long ago.
But then I started to make a daily copy of my firefox settings.
Saved me more than once ... and I still do it.
