It seems like a lot of users have been having trouble accessing gimpchat.com in the last few hours.

Which hasn't been my case.

I just opened this thread to see if it's possible to add content.

I noticed the banner at the top is missing.

The problem is that ownership of the "gimpchat.com" name has not been renewed and the due date was today. So on DNS servers the "gimpchat.com" name is being assigned the address of the registrar. This takes time so depending on who the user's provider is, the DNS may have been updated (no access) or not (access still possible). In any case this won't last long and in a few days the only way to access GimpChat will be to add the address (158.106.134.15) in the user's PC /etc/hosts.

Edit: PM'ed Omega, in the hope that the PM also sends an email...

Following ofnuts instructions I put "158.106.134.15 gimpchat.com" into /etc/hosts as superuser.

Thats not helpful to people who can't get here.

Omega obviously did not see reminder emails that Gimp Chat's domain was due for renewal. The problem for Gimp Chat is once it's lapsed anyone can claim the domain name. Thats an interesting idea isn't it?

What we are seeing here is the Gimp Chat hosting account which is still up to date.

Someone at Pixls' site started a thread about this. I noticed this at work, yesterday. When it finally went up, I got my answer with this thread. lololol

At home, still having issue with Cloudflare's DNS (just a few seconds ago). Changed to OpenDNS and I'm here. Not going to edit my host file, Tas. lolololol

gimpchat.com's domain registration was updated at 2021-11-07T08:01:55Z it's extended for a year until 2022-11-06T04:20:35Z.

Even though domain name has been re-registered the site does not appear accessible to casual user who had previously tried to visit while it was down We had a similar problem a couple of years back I think, when the wrong version of GC kept showing after some work done by Omega.

Have updated my 'hosts' file to get in here now; I think the same solution was required on that previous incident.

I took Gimp Chat out of my hosts file, re-booted and cleared browser history so GC is working normally.

Interestingly, here in Australia the NBN (national broadband) doesn't let you choose your own DNS server. That's so the gov can keep everybody's usage data for 2 years. In the past I used google dns servers because they resolved faster than tel$tras. The hosts file edits lets you connect to a remote host directly. Just sayin

It's back to normal here too without needing the hosts file change

Had a small window where site worked before I got the fake site. Site now working again. Thanks Wallace and especially thanks to Omega. Same problem at work but it cleared around 2pm (never log in at work; just a lurker; lol).

I would try a different computer and browser. Leaving it in your hosts file is no big issue but if it gets really quiet on Gimp Chat then everybody else has been locked-out

It should come back in a day or so.

I have now deleted the GC entry from my 'hosts' file and can access GC as normal.
