The crane reference is funny, I thought about it too :)
The photographer used a step ladder to get it just right, but of course luck and timing had a lot to do with it as well.

I'm sure there are many great photographers in the Gimp community. I'd love to see more examples of what people are doing with their photographs in Gimp. A great recent example was, "Autumn in the Houseboat" by PhotoComix.
