Hi, does anyone have this old game to play still. No Graphics at all, but plenty of wasted paper drawing the elaborate cave system.
It used to start with "YOU ARE STANDING AT THE END OF A ROAD BEFORE A SMALL BRICK
BUILDING. AROUND YOU IS A FOREST. A SMALL
STREAM FLOWS OUT OF THE BUILDING AND DOWN A GULLY." It was one of the first true adventure games!
I can find the description of the game on the internet, but not a playable version.
When I used to be on midnight hardware support shift by myself, I used to power up the Melbourne data Center and run this game under VM on a IBM 3155 and later on a IBM 3145. I loaded the game on 3420 (2400) tape drive.I know this dates me but I have also seen some others on this forum that would remember the 70's working in the IT industry. (the word IT was not invented yet then)
If anyone has this game on a 5 1/4" diskette and has a means of copying it to say 3 1/2" or CD, I would pay for the shipping costs or email me the disk image . I still have a 5 1/4 diskette reader that works (capable of reading all 5 1/4 formats) and a 3 1/2" reader. Please pm me if you can help so I may give you my email address.
Cheers wbool63

Well Googling for YOU ARE STANDING AT THE END OF A ROAD BEFORE A SMALL BRICK got me this page:
http://jerz.setonhill.edu/if/canon/Adventure.htm
which has links to the original FORTRAN source code, but also a link (via a re-direct) to this page:
http://www.ifiction.org/games/playz.php ... &mode=html which appears to be the 1994 reconstruction, and playable online.

It comes with the default install of Slackware. It is called 'adventure' and is part of the BSD games package.

I once entered a contest to recreate video games using Legos. Here is my entry:

@ Kevin , Thank you , I will bookmark the page as there is no "save game" function. (never was). I will have to plot the game again to get through to the end and that is why it took months to finish. Being in hardware my only way to cheat was to make a print out of the tape and try make sense of the ebcdec ? output print at the side of the page. Even that was very difficult.
@ Saulgoode Thank you , the gif is amusing. Is it possible to install the slackware games module in Ubuntu? I really cannot see myself, making another partition to install a slackware linux.

We used to change the name of the program as playing "adventure " was banned in the data centre. It was probably the most expensive game played ever. The power consumption of a IBM 3155 plus peripherals would be tremendous with the airconditioning plant as well just to play probably 30 kb of code as the only standalone guest under VM.

Thanks Guys

Hi Saulgoode , thank you for the link, I have tried several ways to get this to work. Unfortunately, all I can achieve is a file called "Adventure " (which I presume is the correct file). The file shows as an executable file if I look at properties . My problem is that it will not open or execute. It is a binary file but I do not know what means there is to execute it. I tried downloading as I386 and Amd 386 (x64) ? (anyway both types). Have tried the link in Windows . I have several files called Adventure (multiple downloads) with a Gear symbol above it, but am utterly flummoxed as to where to go next to make this work. I shall have another shot at it tomorrow , but give up for tonight, 1 am !

Cheers John

Open a text terminal and type the command 'adventure'. (Better still, 'rlwrap adventure', which will use the GNU readline library.)

Thank You Saulgoode , that appears to be working perfectly. Now for some continuous printer paper and on to mapping. I think I still have some in the garage.
