I am running Windows XP.
Yesterday my speakers quit working on the back plugin on the tower.
I went through the whole check list, checked plugs, checked mute etc etc. I went restore and took it back a couple of days, that didn't fix it.
I now have it plugged into the front plug-in and it works but is is pretty static-y. I prefer to use the rear ones.

Could anyone tell me what I do to find out what is wrong with the rear plug-in? (Techie-I-am_not)........ or how I test it somehow?

Thanx, Molly :geek

I'd be happy to try to help.
I'd need to know what sound card and what speakers you have before venturing a guess ...
It could be as simple as a setting or driver or as complicated as needing a new sound card or something in between.

I am looking to find where to look. I don't know what a sound card looks like or where it is and I use the altec lansing speakers with the boom box that is plugged directly into the jack at the back. It just quit with no notice yesterday but the font jack works fine except for a bit a static....
I have a Gateway Digital Media Manager Gt-5064

If your front panel works but back doesn't, you could have a blown interface at the back. Assume you are using the built in motherboard sound. I've seen this before; little can be done short of using an external soundcard (they are cheap now. The other possibility is a near defective connector or a slightly open speaker wire that when you connect to the front connector, it sort of works, but when stretched to the rear speaker conector, it doesn't. If your have a realtek system (most built in MB sound systems do), see if you can get to your Realtek speaker control program (usually located at the system tray icons (icons located at the lower right of the screen) and see if when you connect the speaker connector in the rear, that the program sees the speaker connected. Wish I was there Molly; easy to do but hard to explain. :)

I wish you were here too Lyle. I wish my whole street was full of techies. I don't mind paying the money to get it fixed but every time I take it somewhere, they take too long. I can't live a day without it. lol :hoh I will look at that. I see a graphic media accelerator drive accelerator thingy down in the right tray, thats all I see to do with media...

It does sound like a wire inside your insulation is broken.I have the same problem, so i took a stick pin, wrapped a wire tie around the pin and the speaker wires and stuck the pin in the wall behind the desk. Then i just turned on the speakers and wound the wire around the pin until i got good sound.Works for me, but im not sure if it will fix your problem.I will get new speakers later, just cant afford them now. (im a cheapy i know) =P

Hope you get yours working Molly.

Wow that sounds scary Rod, will I get electrocuted? lol...... I just might try that if I can find a stick pin. I use the altec lansing speakers with the boom box. I plug that directly into the jack in the tower..... I also use my stereo head phones so I have a double jack plug that I plug into the tower and use one side for the speaker plug and the other side for the headphones....
