Pretty cool, but I'm a filter guy and some nearly forgotten trivia: The Impressionist plugin was originally shipped with Office 2000 Premium (or was it Professional; I can never remember. lol).

He is not just skilled with Word, he knows well some basic and once you know the software used is not so important

He doesn't quote LibreOffice or Gimp but all would be cool logo effect for gimp too ,

...i didn't try but i believe most of the tuts in his e-book may be done with gimp too
