I have always had problems with taking screen shots on drop down menus.
The PrtScr doesn't work on drop downs. I use my screen shot App all the time and it works very well but I can't catch just the drop down without printing the whole desktop. I have tried to set it at 8 secs to give me time to get the drop down showing but it won't let me select just that part.
Does anyone out there have a better way? Thanks

I presume you're asking about doing this in Linux?

If I read the GIMP docs right on this: http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-file-create.html then I can see why you would have a problem as the Delay is applied at the wrong time.

Here on lowly Windose, I can select to capture a single window and set the delay to something. Select which window I want using the cross cursor, then the delay is applied and the capture done, tool tips and all:

In Linux, it works exactly the same as paynekj's Windows example. If you select "Current Window", it will capture the current Window, rather than the entire desktop. In this case, the "Current Window" is GIMP.

The Dropdown Menu is not considered a "Window", so selecting "Current Window" will not grab just the "Dropdown Menu", if that is what you're after. That is not possible with these screen shot apps.

Interesting...

On my desktop, drop-down menus are indeed considered separate windows.

The only way for me to get a shot of GIMP with a menu open is to capture the entire screen.

I guess you're asking this in general terms rather than GIMP specific menus, where you can use the "tear-offs" to get separate windows when accessing the menus from the right-click(context) menu:

Yes, I want to screen capture all drop downs, but realize it is not possible without capturing the whole window.
I had to use my iPad to take a picture yesterday of the gradient drop down I posted yesterday, then download to the thread.

A couple of other options,
Use multi-window mode.
Use detached dockable dialogs.

I never thought of the detached dockable dialogues, that makes sense, have you tried it Odin?
What is multi-window mode?

Multi-window mode is when you uncheck Single-window-mode.

Detached dialogs are considered a Window in Gimp Screen shots.
These are 3 individual (unedited) Window screen shots from a Dockable dialog.
#1 Select detached dialog, #2 hover drop down menu, #3 hover drop down sub-menu.

You should be able to hover any menu or sub-menu and get a Window screen shot.
Just give yourself 10 sec., to find and hover the menu.

Another unedited example, Filters | Render | Clouds (sub-menu)

Thanks Odin, dumb me. I only use the single mode so I blocked the multiple one out... I hated them.

Multi window mode with View | Shrink wrap is useful for some screen shots.

I'm not sure how I might be of any help with this issue, but I love your latest avatar Molly. :jumpclap

I suppose we are all at the mercy of the Window Manager we are using. I'm use MATE's default Window Manager marco (formerly metacity).

Which WM are you using?
