You need to reload your browser. I overwrote the original one.

Liking this...although the pencils do resemble a fence...maybe flip them upside down like they were originally?

it would be interesting if every banner had to have 3 certain things...the text, the pencils in some fashion (especially since it is the pencils that are the bookmarklet), and of course, the mascot.

It looks great.

I used a little gradient on the background and put it up so we can check it out. Don't forget to clear the browser cache to see the new banner.

Here's the flattened PNG and I attached the tweaked xcf.

If you want to do that white shadow on the text, the text without shadows is in the attachment above.

I did, and I am. White drop shadow doesn't do much for me. Made the settings 0, 0, 20 and duped the ds layer. Too fuzzy.

Well, it was just thought. Figured a light color might look good against the darker background. Guess you don't know unless you try something. :cu

I flipped the pencils just to see what that looked like..

Adding the other one for comparison.

I'm liking the one that is up now. :bigthup

Except for a few things. The drop shadow should be in the same direction for everything. Wilber and the top text (really love that btw!) are to the right. The bottom text is to the left. A no no for a site about GIMP. :nono

The layers/toolbox look a bit big. Maybe lower it or resize it?

Did I mention that I love the Gimp Chat text? :coolthup

My only critique on this banner now is Wilber's cap.
I think it should stay the same height but should be a bit wider.

The shadow on the small text would be in GnuTux's file. That can be easily changed.

The Gimp Chat text is the SF Beaverton font. I like the crookedy letters in it. There are several versions in the zip file and that one is the SF Beaverton Heavy.

You can get it here. Shy Foundry puts out very clean, true fonts. I've never had a "bad" one from there.

Found another image of Wilber for experimenting with. Good, vectored images of him are hard to find or I'm not looking in the right place.

:lol ... and I said I wasn't going to mess with it anymore.

Drop shadow direction changed on slogan.

I agree with Jolie. I like the overall design of the one that's up there now.

It was a total team effort. :hi5

I agree that the shadowing is inconsistent and it is more obvious on the small text than elsewhere.

Technically though, none of the elements in the design have consistent shadowing. Wilber's shadow is centered along the x axis and offset positively on the y axis. Shadows are missing on his paint brush and his hat. The Gimp Chat text shadow is offset positively on both the x and y axises and the small slogan text is offset negatively on the x and positively on the y axises. There are no shadows at all on the layers/tools boxes or on the pencils. Pretty much every element has different or missing shadows.

Personally, I really like the graduation hat concept and think it's perfect for a gimp learning site. The problem i noticed with the hat is that the gold tassel is getting lost in the yellow pencil. Perhaps that can be tweaked but I think it looks better with the hat than without it. Maybe we just change the color of the pencil behind the tassel to correct that.

After a good nights sleep, those are the problems I see.

There are lots of Wilbers to choose from. http://chrisdesign.wordpress.com/2009/0 ... ollection/

The pencils aren't rendered too well. You can't see it with a light background but if you give it a drop shadow it will show. My last fiddle attempt made no sense at all shadow wise but I didn't fancy cleaning those pencil points up.
