Only just starting to learn about applying GMIC filters to improve photos, but I can see that they certainly do help to bring out the hidden detail ...

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten all about the 'Reveal the hidden demon-troll' filter!

I am reasonably happy with the results I got, particularly at the second attempt, but others should not underestimate what they are achieving.
However, none of us brought out the detail like OMG!
Good to see that Gollum is alive and well.
Does this mean he is now seeking the ring in Spain, and are we going to see more of his exploits?

Thank you so much David, I enjoy your results. :) I'm not an expert on photography but I find your results to be very good. I see the colours more lively and great improvement in details as the colour you get on the leaves. Thank you so much. :bump

Issabella,

Very good results! But why not combine both pictures?

Open the darker picture and then the lighter one as a layer. Now you have the lighter one on top.

Select the parts which are too bright (the road, the grass, the wall and a few small areas).
Feather by 20 - 25 pixels so that we don't have sharp edges.

Add a layer mask - white, total opacity. Take a very large brush and paint the layer mask with black.
It will only paint the selected areas, so no need to take care!

Now the selected areas from the lower, darker picture will show.

I hope I have made this clear!

david.

Once you have multiple layers for different parts of the image you can make much greater adjustments on each layer to get the effect that you want.
If you haven't already done it, I suggest you download the saulgoode Luminosity Mask action. It is a very quick and easy way of masking areas of different brightness, and if none of the masks are exactly right for your requirements you can very easily modify them.

I am very glad to try and help - it also makes me think and learn!

david.

@issabella,

You see! You have been making me think and learn! Thank you.

I decided I could put more life into the water in this photograph, and then there is red in the leaves on the ground, and an iron post which spoils the view!

Tell me what you think - you are my teacher!!!!

david.
