Here's something for you to do if you are not too busy atm.
Sure many of you have seen stunning infrared photography

Most people don't have the necessary photo-equipment for this, which leaves them with one option - to fake it.
There is Lyle's post on this topic here.

What and how would you do to simulate IR? No IR simulation scripts please.
I'm hoping for the results with high contrast picture and as much detail preservation as possible.
Like those pictures on Bing. Doesn't have to be monochromatic [in fact, I'd prefer some colors, but it's totally up to you].

Here the picture to work on (free pic from a wallpaper website)

Hoping for Ofnuts (known for his photo expertise skills) and PatDavid (b&w wizardry) to weigh in ;)

Here we go…I duped image, turned off top layer eye, bottom layer slight blur, then colors>components>channel mixer>upped red and green, lowered blue, checked mono and luminosity. Turned top layer back on, very low opacity and grain merge, just for a hint of color. Then I forget, but I used highlights and shadows and messed with that a bit. Hopefully this looks infra-reddish. It seems to have more definition on my monitor, and also when you click on it here and it comes up in the little tabbed box.

Thank you 2-ton, dinnaset!

I think we can discuss the results later.
BTW, i'm still trying to improve on my simulation, will submit later.

Using color inversion, luminosity mask, channel mixer, curves,
color range, brightness/contrast, sharpness adjustments,etc.etc.

Not sure I can replicate it again :hehe way too many manipulations

still hoping for better outcome.

I do not know anything about IR. I had to read a little about before trying something.
I have found no satisfactory technique.
The tutorials I have experienced were not convincing, and worked for some types of images, with bad results for other types.
Still, it was a learning experience more.

Might be a bit late for an entry but here's my attempt at it. Inverted colors and channel mixer fun was had by me.

This looked like it could be fun, so I took a crack at it. I've got some familiarity with the "look" of it from doing some actual digital IR photography . If you'd like to see the layers I used, a compressed archive of my .xcf file is downloadable here.

Great job Clouds!
This is as good as it could possibly get.

Looking at your gimp file I have a pretty good idea of what steps were taken except for the two layers.
Do you mind to share your skills? A tutorial (even mini-tutorial) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for accepting this challenge of mine and coming up with the excellent result.

Thank you!

Which two layers do you mean?

Well, from bottom up, the layers are:
- The original image
- A desaturated copy (Average)
- Channel Mixer output (R -100, G 200, B -100 to make plants very bright and everything else very dark) also with some levels applied, blend mode Overlay
- A duplicate of the above with the opacity reduced, since just one Overlay layer wasn't enough
- Another duplicate, contrast adjusted and blend mode Grain Merge
(All of this was to affect the contrast of the desaturated image, but I didn't just want to use the Channel Mixer result since it had clipped highlights and shadows)
- Yet another duplicate set to blend mode Lighten and a bit less than 100% opacity, to get that glow in the foliage but retain some highlight detail
- A gradient-mapped copy of the whole flattened image, set to Color blend mode to make the duo-tone effect
