Pirate , probably the despeckle filter will yield a reasonable result. (not super good, but I doubt anything will)Image
Apply the despeckle filter twice. Or another time for more despeckling. However every time you repeat the filter you lose definition
Good luck

G'MIC anisotropic smoothing (in the repair section) with default settings works as good as anything.

Used Iain's Noiseprint preset for the bulk of the cleaning; did a few "other things" too. Too dinky to do much more, but, with some additional tlc, it could be made better. :)

Don’t be afraid to start over. It’s a new chance to rebuild what you want.

Be careful not to go over the top.

As before this is a default anisotropic smooth + a tiny bit of wavelet decompose to sharpen, hardly needed.

From your title I assume you enjoy Gimp. You may know of this tutorial, but I thought to mention it.

I think I am not allowed to link here, so please google 'gimp org smart sharpening'. that addresses ISO noise, grain, and selective unsharpening. Interesting links there too.

oh, a reference to "image -> Mode -> Decompose." is found in the newer menu set 'color - > components'

Use wavelet-denoise and you should see pretty good results. It's included in my builds or you can build it yourself or get it from the registry.

Hope that helps.

I couldn't get any better results then what was offered. I have found it hard to improve low resolution images without my own interpretation. With that in mind I made an handful of fun ones. I don't want to spam up the thread so I'll post just one:

I am sorry,I missed Your post.
Do I need to do a search on your site for the wavelet?

Pirate,
No, you don't need to search my site for wavelet. My builds come with a whole set of plugins built in, including the wavelet family, gmic, ufraw, advanced tonemapping etc. Simply download the version for your OS (my builds are 7z self-extracting archives), extract to wherever you like - hard drive, external drive etc. In the folder you installed/extracted to, will be a file called gimp-2.8.exe (or gimp-2.9.exe if you are using the 2.9 version). Double-click and you are good to go.

Open your image. Then Filters -> Enhance - Wavelet Denoise. Choose the color model that best suits your image and denoise. I selected CEILAB. Select the channel and give it a shot.

Here is what I get after a couple of minutes:

Cool. It contains the wavelet (denoise, sharpen, decompose) family as well. So, same instructions as above.

My try: Darktable for noise reduction (Denoise - Non local means Overview, equalizer). Manual retouched in GIMP.
