I want to give this touched up photo to my son-in-law. His mother (pictured) has been gone for a few years now.
The original photo looked smoky/noisy to me. So I just added a little contrast and denoised. Just noticed too that it has a line across the picture (horizontally across forehead level) which I don't think I addressed.
oops better add the picture

Nice. I like that frame.
I didn't ask before, how did you remove that mark across the photo?
- I originally thought it was supposed to be there until I saw it over her hair and other side.

sorry for the delay, my PC is crazy, I'm using another one.

To remove that horizontal lighter area across the image I did the following:
- duplicated twice the image (thus: 3 layers in total
- change the mode of the second layer (the intermediate one) to Multiply (obviously you do not see any change unless you click off the visibility of the top layer, but let it visible)
- check the top layer has transparency, if not set it
- using the eraser tool with a smoothed brush of the appropriate size, paint over the defect area
- this will let emerge the colours of the seconf layer (with values multiplied)
- YOU WILL CERTAINLY SEE AN EXAGGERATED DARKER STRIPE EMERGE, don't worry...
... go to the second layer and slightly move the opacity cursor left (in my case I guess up to 30-40% approx) until you see no more disruption in the colours
- flatten
