I recently had a shoot on a boat with some of the seating material giving way; I'm looking for suggestions as to how to repair the tears in the GIMP. The more convincing the better of course, but the work really only has to be less distracting than the half-naked models. How should I tackle this? Any assistance is appreciated, thanks.

This is quite easy, and the slight overcast will help you as well as you won't have real problem with the light, it's typically a... patch work :hehe

On the first one I would patch the part i put in black rectangle (or the and/one at the bottom right) in place of the broken part (select/copy/paste new layer, rotate, move, duplicate for the second part, mask, and may be some clone tool and curves to fine tune)

On the second one I would search on the different pics you have, a corner to patch which can fit better than the actual one to patch it as well

IMHO, next time, just bring some towels ;)

Try Heal selection in Filters. You will need to d/load the plugin if it is not there.

If you want Gimp to fix your tears you may be in for a let down :( . However we can do something about the photo. I have done one and am working on the second, not with a lot of success though. Maybe someone will get in before me. By using a bit of cloning and healing. Tried with the deformation tools but am not proficient enough with them.

63 is speaking about another "beast", which takes only few seconds
make a selection of the defect then > Filters > Enhance > Heal selection
It will replace the selection automatically for you with surrounding pixels in a matter of seconds

Select defect

Filters > Enhance > Heal selection

3 seconds later... voila!

Well, I had a hell of a time getting the Resynthesizer plugin installed and running, but...oh yeah, it was worth the hassle. Thanks again to everybody that responded.
