Yes. You can do it in GIMP. Just create a transparent image of the figure and place a copy above each of the four layers in the animation, then merge each figure down & export as an animated gif.

i wonder if conbagui's color scheme helps to see more movement in this image.

here's a try with text, but i don't think text works as well as a repeated pattern.
