This one's fantastic to me; just wish there was a true gui based hirez version that would work for Windows. :)

Beautiful job. How do you keep the face clear? Do you duplicate the original then mask out the face on the filtered one so the original face shows through?

lylejk: thank you. who wouldn't wish for that, sigh...
2-ton: thank you! hehe, yes, that's how i do it, but i make things a lot harder for myself too, otherwise i wouldn't be anmal :). i usually make many renders with different styles, often using first deep dream and then dreamscope. then i open the original, add the different deep dream/dreamscope renders as layers with black layer masks, then i start painting in all the details from each render that i want to keep. for example, the layer that held a pure deep dream render had her little pet in it, so i painted it in. then i added details to the dress and hair from different layers til i liked what i had. i then made a visible of just the sfyxtrian lady and her pet, on transparent background. the plants came from separate pictures, and so did the background. when i was rather happy with the whole i made a visible and put it through dreamscope for the fake painting effect, but when i'd pasted it in as a new layer i put it below the visible of the lady and her pet. why make life easy? :hehe

more deep dream and g'mic stuff - the model pic had a lot of art nouveau in the pose and hair style, so i tried to make deep dream art nouveau. made quite a few different versions, but these two i liked best.

I find the 2nd one very fitting with the snake head and the curvature of her dress/body.
They're both great though. :)

I think I like the second one best, too, more critters in better places! Animal, you do have a great patience and imagination to create these wonderful pictures. I have neither.

trandoductin: thank you! yes, the second one has that advantage, definitely.
2-ton: thank you - but patience doesn't really apply here, as it would take much more patience for me to do something with the result if it was perfect at once. then i'd have to spend much more time than i like trying to make something of my own with it and nothing tries my patience more!

hmm.., now i'm thinking i might be able to combine the two images above and get the best of them both. the colour scheme of the first and the critters from the second? while i think about that i'm ready to post my next, it's called "and saint bob said to saint kevin - guess we're not in kansas anymore, kev!"

2-ton: i agree, and the whole render had even more of them - for what i was making i needed to mask off the "window" with the saints, but there was particularly one big centipede-like thingy in the original that i liked, so i saved the original render to use in another project. some pictures just seem to be made for the deep dream generator, while others don't seem to give much of interest at all.

dinasset: thank you :)! but you're wrong, you know - you could easily make something like this yourself and undoubtedly something a lot better too, since all i did was put a photo through the deep dream generator, then put them together in gimp and do some layer masking and special effects in g'mic. easy enough, especially with your g'mic filter skills :)!

...I wait upon David's interest in creating a G'mic filter for doing a "deep dream generator", I'm sure he can make it (the problem being always available time....)

i made some rather cool text today that i put in my sig and a welcome post for a newbie, so i'm sure you've already seen the effect. it uses the deep dream generator (guess you could do it with dreamscope if you preferred, but i find the dreamscope results a lot harder to work on) and some g'mic filters, mainly "drop water". here's another example of the effect and the steps (or main steps, i always play around with layer modes and masks and stuff to get the maximum of the actual effect, but all those things are optional!) i took to get it:
Image

1. make a text layer on transparent background and alpha select, save selection as channel
2. make a coloured background and merge with text layer, export as png but don't close down.
3. deep dream png as many times as wanted.
4. open deep dreamed png as layer on original image.
5. open g'mic and go to "light and shadow" -> "relief light". run at default, or adjust settings according to taste, but set output to new layer.
6. set relief light layer to "overlay" and adjust opacity, all you want is some more volume, not an oversaturated image.merge layers.
7. turn your saved channel to selection, invert selection, pick your deep dream layer and press delete.
8. go to g'mic "deformations" -> "drop water" and set input to "active and above" and 'shapes' to 'opacity on top layer'.
9. make a visible of the result, turn off or delete layers below.
10. go to g'mic "details" -> "freaky details" and run at default but with output set to new layer. set new layer on overlay and pull opacity down to around 50%. merge down. done!

Three new tries. As you say AnMal, some photos give really surprising results. :)
