One for the graphics dabblers - Superformula2D

I was digging into superformula as by Johan Gielis. There is a PS superformula.8bf by Richard Rosenman that works with xnview, you probably know this one already. Then I came across this application that allows an interactive use of the superformula parameters. It is java, so should work in most OS's including windows. Can't see a reference to it on this site.

Saves to pdf, so only really good for generating a shape and import into Gimp.

The link to the download is at the very bottom of this page.

There is a nice looking 3D one there as well, so far beats me, made for Mac, libraries fail in my linux OS.

Superformula2D - quick demo, 2.5 mins, no audio.

Interesting. I was not aware of these curves. As this is something G'MIC can do, I've added a 'Superformula' entry in the 'Patterns/' folder (should be available after a filter 'refresh').

Let me know if you find it useful.

Cool David. Used your new Superformula preset and feed that result into Agony for this result (still experimenting with Agony off and on). :)

Hey David; noticed that the sliders can only have positive values but on the example that Rich posted, Superformula can also have negative values. I'm no coder, but was wonder if you can have the sliders go negative too so that I can create the inverse tapered flower effect like Rich's example? :)

That is true Lyle, now the negative values for n1,n2 and n3 should be possible as well.

I suppose the 'curl' command gives you the version located in your web cache. Maybe after the next reboot :)

Well, first I did close GIMP and reopened and refreshed to no avail. So, I closed my XP VM (which I use for online browsing), and rebooted my PC, then did a refresh but still no avail. I do have 1.5.0.5 so it may require 1.5.0.6 maybe. :)

That is weird. It should be OK with 1.5.0.5 as well.
I've copied the file once again, could you check this time ?
Thanks.

The refresh apparently worked David. This is going to be another cool toy. A few weeks ago I figured aout a way to make butterfly wings. This looks promising to be able to do this too. Of course the one I did here is a little deviated. lol

Actually, this is nothing more than implementing the equations available from the Wikipedia page, nothing really outstanding. If you achieve to do something useful/beautiful with this filter, I would be really interested, since I have indeed no idea of the practical use of this filter :)

The art of math is very much appreciated by me and many here. I can see taking a result and then dup rotate to create more complex forms. Anyway, I took the previous effort and ran agony through it. Then I used some additional toys (Inkscape for the glaze and a PS Luce filter that I re-discovered for the lighting effect. :)

David:

Any way to smooth those strokes out? Anti-aliasing or smoothing?

There is also a setting in Richard Rosemans SuperFormula plugin that causes the rotational symmetry to be multiplied by 10.It is the m*10 setting on the dialog.Causing this

Lorri if you mean the program Rich linked to, don't worry about it.
I couldn't get it to work in Windows XP either.

Grab GMIC 1.5.0.6 and install it.Then click refresh. You will find it under Patterns/Superformula

same thing. :)

Hi, can any of you tell me where to download solid border and superformula by r. rosenman? Of course they must both be from 2008 and 32-bit. Thank you so much...

The Rosenman site is gone but you can still use the Internet Archive for a snapshot. This from 2008

https://web.archive.org/web/20080609234 ... downloads/

PhotoShop .8bf plugins You will need a working Gimp pspi plugin for those (or maybe use Windoze IrfanView)
