I was actually wondering if there was such a program, because there should be, for peeps who like to experiment movement animations. :) It's cool to know there is such a program.

Nope, seperate program in itself, but you can save as GIF which can then be loaded into GIMP for editing :D

File/Load Background - find any JPG or BMP on your computer and it will work as a background setting. :)
BMP seems to work the best however.

Nothing seems to accept PNG...

Anyone explain the reasoning?

The PNG image format has been around since 1995
A lot of newer software supports PNG format.
Much of the older graphic software just hasn't been updated to except PNG.

Vista doesn't even let you use PNG as desktop backgounds :lol way to go Microsoft

And I figured this would be newer than 2000 :D

Well I think it's cute and clever and I've been messing a little with it. My first animation! His running off at the end cracks me up. He was supposed to walk off screen, but making stick people walk is hard :P

Errol shared quite a bit of information about making the video on his weblog. Some this information would undoubtedly be useful for animating two-dimensional stick figures.

Now that is inspiring. I have a few Stikfas characters so maybe I'll have a go:

That is one bad little stickman dude. :lol
Saul are those rockem sockem robots?

Those are great - a little know thing people do not realize about this program is that you can add your own stick men. ;) - and cloth them.

I tried Pivot a few years ago. The thing I found fun about it was using it not only for animating human-like stick figures:

Person In Wheelchair
Image

*notice my wheelchair person pops a wheelie (very small wheelie :) )

Couple On Seesaw
Image

But also for animating other items also:

Pendulum

Weight Making a Scale Unbalanced

Crawling Ant

I never got into it a lot, and the animations above are quite simple, but once I started making other animated objects, then it showed some neat possibilities in addition to making the animated stick figures.

Synfig would also be very capable of making such animations, but it would require more time, planning, and work. The neat thing about this program is you can get nearly instant results with minimal effort.

:)
