I just export my Gimp image to temp.png and open it in FF. Then save it back to temp.png after processing and open it as a layer. I keep both programs running.

Unfortunately no there is no way to run FF through GIMP at this time. I was able to talk the guys at FF to allow Affinity Photo to run it now though.
I run Filter Forge 6 Pro through Photoshop Elements and Affinity Photo 1.5. Less stressful. :lol

Hey Lyle does this version you download from Giveaway Of The Day allow editing AND creation of filters too? Thats a big plus if it does. =)

It's professional version, Rod, but only x86 (not 64-bit). I had the opportunity, though, to purchase the version 6 pro for $79 (but I don't think I will ever need such power since I'm too lazy to make my own filters; lol). Thanks for the following up by the way, Rod. :)

I took an existing filter, modified it in the filter editor and saved it for later use. I'm not sure what I'm doing but I think I could make a filter from scratch.

Yeah it isn't to hard. My advice is to join the Filter Forge forums and check out some of the posts there. One fella there released a PDF on creating shapes within your filters. I think you will find that interesting indeed. Also you download filters free there. https://filterforge.com/filters/recent-page1.html

@ Lyle - YEAH! i know FF is really cheap now. :lol Kinda pisses me off as i have updated at a cost of 480 dollars thus far. =) From version 1 - 6 now. You can update for a lifetime license for 289 dollars i think. That is for Pro releases. Also be careful which filters you download from the Filter Forge site as ONLY filters built with 1-5 will work on 5 pro. NONE of the version 6 filters will work. Currently there are 8k + available. FREE.

You can also buy a full set of ALL available filters for version 5 and below (about 26 dollars i believe). This will come zipped with instructions on install. But then you really don't see what you are getting.

So you really don't need to KNOW how to build filters in it. There are plenty available. =) BUT it's fun to create them. Thats how Rodilius started out!

Imperfect method - for test use: Gimp_to_Filter_Forge.py [in menu: Filters/Filter Forge/Filter Forge 5...]

This plugin replaces the original file (Save / copy the original file .../Filter Forge 5/Previews/StandardImageTransparent1Lifesaver.tga - if you want to use it) serving as a preview in FF with the option:
File/Built-In Preview Images/Lifesaver & Use Transparency
The file name (very long) is copied to the clipboard - so when you save in FF you can use the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+V

Tested in GIMP-2.8.20 64 bit with Windows 10 64 bit. =)

It did load the Filter Forge 6 Pro 64 bit interface.

Image

BUT... i couldn't save the changes. Or maybe i am doing it wrong?
Does the file have to be saved as "StandardImageTransparent1Lifesaver.tga" ?

Shellout will launch FF, but not import the shellout temp file. You'll have to browse for it and then do the same after you finish but that undesirable method does work. Too bad the plugin doesn't work. It does work in Irfanview though so I suppose you could shellout to Irfanview and then run the FF plugin within it, but you loose your alpha channel using this method. The plugin will not work in XnView unfortunately. Very strange behavior for FF's plugin. :)

Lyle i EXPORT the image in GIMP to my desktop (as FF_TEMP.png). Then i just edit the image in FF ,using Shellout to open FF.
save in FF as FF_TEMP.png,
then close FF and open "as Layers" the new altered image in GIMP.
Save (EXPORT) the finished product as a new name on the desktop.

Keep the new FF_TEMP.png to write over as needed.

That works for me for now.

Yes; that will preserver the alpha channel (and so will the shellout temp file method), but what a pain. lolol

Rod asked:
"Does the file have to be saved as "StandardImageTransparent1Lifesaver.tga" ?
Yes.
In the py plugin: save in the directory ... / Filter Forge 5 / Previews (possibly edit lines 125).
In FF the same way - save as StandardImageTransparent1Lifesaver.tga in Previews folder (plugin copy the name to the clipboard - can use Ctrl+V).
