This wasp rendered with Blender Cycles in 2.66 render time under 8 min
I did it on krabz blend and couple of tweaks with 270 samples.
Blender gets incredibly potent

k1tesseraena: :hoh do you have to do that! posting spider legs and animated creepy crawlies and now realistic wasps - everything to scare people out of their seats. hmph.

i did look long enough to see it was very well made, then i looked at the dice instead. that one i really liked, nothing scary about it.

thanks molly, he4rty - all the credits to blender crew, krabz and incredible people contributing to blender software

@AnMal I can't believe you still mad at me for those tentacles :rofl Yeah the crawling worm was over the top thing, I admit, should have posted something else :lame But little friendly looking wasp is harmless. It got attracted by the dice's heat radiation all red objects tend to emit.

The details of this wasp are fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
I'm just starting to learn about Blender (I can make some 3D text  ) and I can not even imagine how it would be possible to do something like that wasp.

Hey, YAFU. Not a frequent guest here on GC lately?
The model and texture are not mine, krabz should get all the credits, that's his blend. I just made some changes to it, added extra pair of wings since the original model had only one, changed the lighting a bit, camera angle, finally, I ran a render to get this image.
My intent was to demonstrate possibilities of Blender Cycles in under 8 minutes, well, if you know what i'm talking about, a couple of years ago it would have taken a lot more time to get the same quality with Blender internal render.

oh yes, that's exactly what they want you to think! wasps are clearly out to take over the world and make us their slaves.
i don't know if i got attracted by the heat radiation or not, but i really liked the dice.

Yes it's true  . Lately I've had little time to play with my hobby: GIMP and others OpenSource graphics applications.

Have you used Cycles with CPU or GPU?

It was GPU (aka Experimental in 2.66)

6 feet5 inches 300 pounds, it would take several people to throw me, and I'm only evil to people I really like.

Now I can get an idea of how something so complex can be modeled in blender. Very, very hard work and mastery in blender (watch the video):

I've just seriously gotten into Blender, The only things I've done are this cup and ball thing, and those were following a tutorial. I've yet to come up with anything useful or recognizable. I'd really like to know how to use it in conjunction with Gimp but I haven't figured out yet. I really would like to do simple things like put a logo on the cup or something like that.
Part of what's giving me a fit is that I usually watch tuts from two people, tutor4u and VscorpionC, one of them always uses cycles render and the other always uses blender render. I will persevere.

Pretty good for the starters!
To do logo on the cup check out UV mapping. Mapping images on simple blender objects like a cup is easier than one might think. Blender Wiki explains it in a nutshell.
There should be some good tutorials on YouTube as well.
Talking about GIMP involvement you can find Blender-GIMP real-time painting a lot of fun.
As for the rendering, in older tutorials they use internal Blender render because Cycles render is a relatively recent Blender feature (about 1 year).
If you have NVIDIA graphic card on your PC you might want to download most recent optimized Blender builds with CUDA Kernels and Open Shading Language (OSL) support from Graphicall.org CUDA Kernel allows graphic card GPU rendering it is much faster than CPU rendering and OSL is for advanced renders.
