I'm not sure if this free application has been mentioned here yet, so I'll give it a go. Along with GIMP I also use Paint.net. It is a free application that works well for me. In the time I've been using it, I haven't experienced any bugs. You can find it here: http://www.getpaint.net/

So far, the only version that I know of is 3.5.10. I've been using it for a while ... when I had XP. I'm pretty sure this program works on both Macs & PCs.

The only thing that bugs me about this program is that when it loads, everything opens in separate windows. Single Windows mode isn't an option yet.

Give it a shot and let me know what you think of it. :)

Agree, it's a nice application.
But I'm not convinced it can work under other than Microsoft Windows PC systems (it's a windows application, created for windows users); but I only know windows systems, so I can't really say anything about other systems...

You should try using Shellout to export a layer or image into Paint.Net and back after using liquify or any other filter in paint.net. :)
That is basically all i use it (Paint.Net) for now is to export a layer using Shellout, and use a filter then export back to GIMP. :)

@dinasset. I only use Linux and I can't get Paint.Net there but when I used Windows, I found Paint.Net a very good APP and I used it a lot.
There is one that I had that was a lot the same but with a different name when I was using Linux Fedora17 but I haven't looked for it yet now that I am using Fedora19.
I will look to see and post it here if I can find it.
Found it.
I opened terminal, went to root and typed in yum install pinta.

edit: Clone for paint.net - Pinta

There is a Paint.net port called paint-mono: http://code.google.com/p/paint-mono/

Similary to Rod, my main use of Paint.NET is the Liquify addon that is nearly as good as the Photoshop one (and so much better than the limited IWarp from gimp we have since years)

I still hope that much upgraded IWarp from the gsoc from 2 years ago will come soon to Gimp, i remember how interesting the video of it was.

The main bad point for me regarding Paint.NET is the brush system being very basic and very limited, nothing in common with what is found in Gimp/PS/MyPaint/nearly every image editor.
There are addons trying to work around those limitations, but still it's nothing as good as in the other image editors.

It's nice in some areas but not very wide on brushes or tools for drawing/painting.
Still not bad for some basic stuff.

Here is an example of running Shellout to call PainDotnet for a layer. The layer is exported to PainDotnet and i can then run Grid Warp on the layer and export it back. :)

Image

Results are a copied layer sent to paint.net an effect added and the layer reopened in GIMP. :)
Pretty cool huh? Thank you Rob A.

I toyed with paint.net when it first came out but it's been years. I know people like certain features such as the liquify feature, but my rendering motives haven't allowed me to pursue that side much and when I needed to, iWarp was more then capable for me. Still, a better iWarp would be cool. Since Rod mentioned Shellout, I have to just comment on it. Shellout's the bomb and I use it for nearly every edit I do since there's some PS filters I really like to use that don't run in PSPI. :)

Paint.net isn't that bad of a program. I tinkered around with it last night & came up with some cool textures.

If anyone uses paint.net, can you point me into the direction of where the forum is now located? I tried the url: http://forums.getpaint.net and they have moved.

Norseman 143,
I use both applications. What I can't do in gimp in terms of effects, I can do in paint.net. The only thing I would want for it, is a single window option. Gimp has that option, where as paint.net does not.
