OK, I'm with you now. It was an ancillary part of the tutorial that I added at the bottom. I actually got it from someplace else. It's more corrosion than rust. Getting the colors just right and making it actually look believable is the real challenge. Most stuff you see about making rust is pretty lame at best. That Scott effect was the best one I could find so yeah, if I was going to make say a rust pattern, I would definitely go wiht plasma.

Here's one of my attempts and you can see how lame it is. That's why I just use a pic.

i found a picture of nothing but rust on line and saved it to my computer...i then started gimp. i open up the picture of the rust and added a alpha channel to the layer....then i found the chrome links i made with this tut on my computer and open them as a layer(doing one link at a time)...so now i have two layers, one is the rust picture, the other is the chrome link that i had already saved to my computer....i duplicated the chrome link layer....i turned off one of them, and selected the chrome link layer that was still turned on...i right clicked on the chrome link layer that was still turned on..and selected alpha to selection to highlight the link...then i hit my delete key...while the layer is still highlighted with the alpha channel ,then i merged it down on to the rust picture...then go to select at the top of the page and click on that....scroll down and select "invert" and hit delete again(this should delete the rust background leaving a rusty link)...now you should have a image of the chain link in the color of the rust picture i talked about earlier...now duplicate this layer and select one of them....go to filters>blur>Gaussian blur and enter 25 for both numbers and then hit ok....now select the other rusty link layer and go to filters>Map>bump map and do just like you did to make the chrome link....but i did not blur the rusty link to smooth like before....now just delete the blurred rusty link and turn the chrome link back on...at this point you should have two layers and two layers only....place the chrome link layer below the rusty link layer and just adjust the opacity levels to your liken..i did drop both opacity levels to get what you see in my post above...then i merged both layers and saved as a .png file and then repeated the same steps with the side link and then built the chain the same way you build the chrome chain....and then just added a background....i hope this makes sense....

Excellent tutorials on this forum!

Even though it was a tutorial a few ... months ago, it was easy to follow, both because it was well written and because with the most current versions of Gimp the execution became much faster.

I used the pattern made available in post #21 after completing the tutorial.

OK here are two that i made. Only thing is the weird 'stress' looking patterns i ended up with that
are different than the tutorial. I am on 2.10 and i had to make a few adjustments in the blur amount and minor
other adjustments in the light curve. I still learned a lot and the 'rust' i played with the layer modes and mixed a few things ... fun fun
Thank you

leftyleo, good job! :clap
I don't remember that well, but I think anyone following this tutorial using Gimp version 2.10 will have to make some small adjustments. Blur Gaussian values are an example of this, much higher in the older version.
Good luck with the upcoming tutorials! :bigthup

Thank you Krikor
--Any ideas about that weird chrome stress pattern i got at the bends in the links?
I would think it has to do with the linear/radial/sinusoidal.. or some such setting
:hehe more experimentation is in order
