Lol, on a mac, the delete key is labeled , heh, delete. I didn't use the delete key, I did the edit, cut method on the spread layers.

I added an image of what the top spread layers should look like after i deleting the original text area. I think it helps better understand what has to be done.

Sweetness! Nice tutorial, JFish!

This is my result (the only thing I did differently was put my text layer on subtract mode to give my writing more depth):

This is an actual picture of me writing GIMP in the sand at Long Beach, WA:

My best friend lived in Washington. We flew up and spent 3 weeks with him and just drove around the state and through mountains. Man, I fell in love with that state. I'll never see it again though, and that's sad.

Never say never...because you never know!

In step 7, IIRC, you need to have the text selection still active, yes?

No, it's pretty certain. It's 2500 miles away, i can never come up with that much money again and he died last year so i don't know anyone there.

right with this one I am still getting stuck at step 5 and I went through the whole thing and still ended up with black spread marks in the end.

You can turn off the spread layers (eye icon) when bumping, they don't have to show.

Maybe you could just go to Edit/Clear?

Edit/cut works because that is how I did it. I also had turned off the eye for the spread layers so I could see what the bumps looked like on the sand layer.

I do tutorials just to learn how to use Gimp better even if it's not an outcome I normally would use. So even though I don't think I would ever have the need for a sand-writing graphic, I did learn a lot of how to use bump map and chisel better.

I do alot of my tutorials so i can see if i can make them look realistic. I think if they look more realistic it gives the image a better quality outcome.
