1. Start with a square canvas
2. Fill it with a pattern/picture/gradient of your choice
3. Open G'MIC and go to render > 3D image object, use the cup.
4.*Before you press 'apply' or 'ok' rotate it, using x angle, y angle and z angle.
I used x angle - 149.80, y angle - 266.16, z angle - 177.05 (not sure that I moved this one much)

(You can play with other settings there too if you want it different)
5. Using the rectangle or elipse select just go around the top of the cup and bring the selection down as far as you wish. I cut the bottom of the round off with the selection.
6.'Crop to selection' That's it!

you should let us know what angles you use too ... because it's extremely slow for me i got impatient and cancelled out before it had a chance to finish rendering preview.

the bowl is nice, but what is the reason of cutting the bottom part with a straight line?
The bowl is seen from the high, thus the bottom part is necessarily round, for the rule of perspective.
This way of showing it makes sense only if the cut is the border of an imaginary frame, not if you think to show the bowl on a table. Am I wrong?

I only did it to give the impression of a flat bottom - not all bowls are completly round at the base

Sallyanne - thanks for the heads up on this - I love the results ... in glass of course !! I thought it was only me in Oz who does not sleep.

Tran - I found it to be a very quick render.

but it's impossible! Even a bowl with a totally flat base, when seen from the high, shows the bottom curved.
Do a test: take a bowl in your home, with a flat base, look at it from the high or even better take a picture and you see by definition a curved bottom...

oh, OMG posted glasses in perspective, good !
Sallyanne, look at the base of those glasses, they are obviously flat otherwise the glasses weren't glasses, but rolling cups; nevertheless you do not see any straight flat line anywhere.

OMG - can't get away from the glass? Nice work. Have you tried the other shapes with those patterns yet?
Very nice Tran....you even put a drop shadow. I realized I didn't do that.
Thank you Odinbc. Yes my first one.
Dinasset no your not wrong. I did mention though it is up to the person how much if any that they cut off.

Well, another tale of woe!. I almost was finished with my attempt last night, saving it several times as I worked (so I thought). Suddenly I got some type of error that "no memory was allocated" and froze the computer. I waited but could not get out of it. I had to turn off my computer and wait awhile. Of course, when it booted back up. I found that nothing I worked on had been saved! First time for that one! Today, so far, all is well. I'm trying to get everything I really want copied to an external drive so my computer can visit the Geeks Squad for awhile. I re did my attempt today.

My first bowl! When I was finished I actually thought it looked like a mortar (now I need a pestle). Thank you for the tutorial. Beautiful results everyone. oldmangrumpy, that black one is gorgeous.
