Working on the penguin tut...oy, it's gonna be a few day to finish! I'm only on step 20.

Well I bit the bullet and that tutorial took me about 4.5 to 5 hours to do. Of course I took some breaks from it. It's very tedious and you can be sure I saved my finished one with the layers in an xcf file. I don't know where those light pixels came from around the feet. Shouldn't be there and I'll have to go back to my layers but that will happen tomorrow.

One of the hard things is moving selections long distances like left: 100, down: 80. It's hard for me to be steady and watch the numbers at the bottom of the image window. There are some in there where you only move a few pixels both ways and those are easy to do with the arrow keys. Too bad there isn't a dialog box that you can plug in the values for the move tool. I suppose I could have put up guides ...

Those ugly light pixels around the feet are caused by the Tux Drop Shadow. These are the steps I did to fix it:

In step 40 and after doing step F.

Selection > Shrink 1

Selection > to Path (this smoothes the selection)

Unselect.

Selection > From Path

Continue with step G and the drop shadow.

The one on the left is the first Tux I posted. The right one is the one I fixed.

I saved the xcf final Tux in the tutorial packet as a png image. I see there are even more light pixels around that one.

I eyeballed some of the moves when I discovered there wasn't a dialog window with numbers for the move tool. My highlights will prolly be a bit off because of that.

Nice work, O! We can update the tutorial to reflect those changes, as well as add in any additional shortcuts or improvements posted back to this thread.

Also, we should probably split this thread or get mahvin to start a new thread with his cool Wilber image. That deserves its own thread.

Mahvin started a new thread here and I'm checking this tutorial thread for anything that needs moving and will delete the rest of the Wilber stuff in here.

Thanks Rod. I locked the transparency on the layers I wanted to color and used a pattern I had to fill them.

BTW If anyone does the tutorial, save your original Tux layers as an xcf file. When you want to change something, open your layers, do Ctrl + D to duplicate it and close your original one. That's a lot of work to lose. One of the things I did was make paths of all of those components and named them the same name as the layer names.

I love a challenge so I undertook this one - at some point last night after a few hours, I swore the little penguin waved at me  - had to call it a night. Woke up, tackled it and I love the way it came out (except for the white pixels around the feet). Great tutorial.

Nice work, Dalia!

Oregonian posted a fix for the white pixels in Post #14.

I really should add that fix to tutorial. :hehe

Thank you GnuTux for your comments and the tutorial. By the way, I absolutely love your sig; would there be a tutorial for it?

Thanks, Dalia.

There isn't a tutorial per se, but the sig was created with my Logo Toolbox script, using a block font and filling with an ICE pattern. I also applied the Ice Anywhere script to get the icicles. The penguins are colored dings that I placed in strategic locations. :pengy

I do plan on creating a few tutorials for getting the most out of the Logo Toolbox script, highlighting some of the tips and tricks to get the best results from the script.
