Update - April 24th
Ok I've changed the pdf file so if you'd like to give this a try and previously downloaded the pdf the new one's name is Rose Update. Also, conbagui, I hope you don't mind that in the pdf I refer everyone to see your response in this thread regarding the instructions for the brush - thank you for the lesson.

One of my first tries at Gimp was a tutorial from psd-dude; Rose Text Effect. He has many text tutorials on his site which, for someone savvier than I, conversion to Gimp could be easy. I am not, as I've said, the creative genius behind this tutorial - all credit goes to psd-dude at http://www.psd-dude.com/tutorials/photo ... t-tutorial.

Change colors, make it yours - take a few minutes to lose yourself. You'll need both of the attached files.

Thanks molly. That's what attracted me to it at first; simple, until I got my hands on it to "re-write" :hehe

I used to have Photo Shop Cs3 and Cs4 and I forgot everything I knew when I had it. I wouldn't begin to know how to convert it now to Gimp because I forgot all the settings etc.
But for those that do I hope they are giving credit to the author.

That's pretty. The thorns do look a little less organic then they could be, but it's a nice looking PS to Gimp tut conversion.

Wallace, organic is a nice way of describing them - honestly, they are downright awful. I suppose the right way of doing it would have been to select portions of the text at a time and have the angle of the brush point in the right direction  Or do each thorn individually?! If there is an easier way of doing it, please oh please let me know.

conbagui - I think the above explains why they look the way they do.

Dalia, did the thorns come separately? If so, I would remove all the ones that are upside down. The points shouldn't be sticking into the stem. They should be staggered and further apart.

Look at that - very nice conbagui, thanks, I will give it a try tomorrow. In the meantime, anyone attempting this tutorial please heed to all the great feedback in this thread.

Ok, couldn't wait until tomorrow. It worked! Took your advice and it certainly was much easier/faster. Did this really quick, still could use some cleaning up but I am so much happier with it than the one I posted at the beginning of this thread.
