DIGITAL CLOCK
a GIMP tutorial by dietmar

Please notice:

I also recommend activating "View -> Snap to grid" for better selection
management.
I used GIMP 2.8.14 on Win7 64Bit for this, so I am not sure whether it will
work on older versions of GIMP.
And remember: Save often, perhaps with different filenames for the different
steps, to make reproducing or changing afterwards easier!

Here we go...

* Create a new image, 500x500px, with a white background.
* New layer "shape".
* Make a rectangular selection with rounded corners (radius 15) in the center
of the image. The selection should have a aspect ratio of about 2.5:1 (mine
was 440x200) -> to path "shape".
* Drag a horizontal linear gradient from FG #7c7c7c to BG #bebebe.
* Script-Fu: Apply inner shadow, color black (#000000), opacity 50%, mode
multiply, size 10, distance 0.
* Select the "shape" layer again.
* Script-Fu: Apply bevel and emboss, inner bevel, up, size 6, rest stays
default.
* Select -> None.
* This is what it could look like:

Image

* New layer "screen" on top of all layers.
* Path "shape" to selection.
* Select -> Shrink, about 10px.
* Drag a diagonal linear gradient from FG #000000 to BG #222222 (from upper
left to lower right).
* Script-Fu: Apply inner shadow, color black (#000000), opacity 50%, mode
normal, size 6, distance 0.
* Select the "shape" layer again.
* Script-Fu: Apply bevel and emboss, inner bevel, up, size 6, rest stays
default.
* Select -> None.
* This is what it could look like:

Image

* New layer "bg time" on top of all layers.
* To create the display, I simply used a font which draws the digits, e.g.
"DS-Digital", which can be downloaded here:
http://www.dafont.com/ds-digital.font
* Add text "88:88" in this font to the display. I used color #220a0a, size
180. This will create the dark background of the digits. If you want to
be more precise (since the ":" and the too big spaces around it didn't
please me) you can just add "88", duplicate layer, position it, add the
":" manually via 2 rectangles, and merge all down to "bg time".
* Duplicate layer -> "fg time".
* Layer -> Alpha to selection.
* Fill the selection with #cb1919, option "fill similar colors".
* If this will fill the whole "88:88" (in some cases), increase the view
zoom factor and use the free select tool to delete the highlighted parts
of the digits you don't want to be displayed.
* Use the "select by color" tool to select your highlighted digits.
* Select -> Invert.
* Hit "Del" to delete the background digits from the "fg time" layer.
* Script-Fu: Inner glow, color #ff3535, opacity 75%, size 2.
* Select -> None.
* This is what it could look like:

Image

* New layer "socket" above the "background" layer.
* Make a rectangular selection from the bottom of the screen (no problem to
overlay the screen, since the layer is below it!) down.
* Add an ellipse to the bottom to create a rounded socket (see below).
* Select -> To path "socket".
* Drag a horizontal linear gradient from FG #7c7c7c to BG #bebebe.
* Script-Fu: Apply inner shadow, color dark grey (#333333), opacity 50%, mode
normal, size 6, distance 0.
* Select -> None.
* This is what it could look like:

Image

* New layer "plate" below the "socket" layer.
* Create an oval shape selection under the stand, adjusted to the oval of the
socket, to achieve a "3D" effect (see below).
* Select -> To path "socket".
* Drag a horizontal linear gradient from FG #7c7c7c to BG #bebebe.
* Script-Fu: Apply inner shadow, color dark grey (#333333), opacity 50%, mode
normal, size 6, distance 0.
* Select the "plate" layer again.
* Script-Fu: Apply drop shadow, color #222222, opacity 75%, size 4, angle 90,
distance 4.
* Select -> None.
* This is what it could look like:

Image

* Add the alarm clock symbol from the "Segoe UI Symbol" font in color #cb1919
(as text) to the "screen" layer.
* Add any date in "DS-Digital" font, same color, as text to the "screen"
layer.
* Add "AM" or "PM" accordingly.
* This is what it could look like:

Image

* New layer "radio" on top of all layers.
* Create a small circle in the upper right above the screen and fill with any
color.
* Create a bigger circle around, then subtract a smaller circle selection
inside it and fill with any color. Repeat that 2 or more times for more
"hooks" around.
* Alpha to selection.
* Drag a radial gradiant from down top top, FG #20096a and BG #3914af.
* Use the free select tool to select and delete non-used parts of the rings.
* Select -> None.
* This is what it could look like:

DONE!

Congratulations, you have successfully completed the tutorial! Now it would
be a wise decision to save your work under a new name for later changes or
whatever.

If you find any errors or something I could improve, feel free to comment!

Yes, I will surely slow down soon since I am running out of time...

But I have to pin down my ideas and ideas from other tuts I made as long as they are "fresh" :)
