I have been struggling with how to create an embossed dot effect, like you see on greeting cards and invitations. Well I have finally found settings that work pretty well. This is the first tutorial I have ever written so please forgive me if it hard to understand.

1. Create a new document (any size) I used 1000 x 1400 200 dpi so it can be used and printed for a greeting card.

2. Create a new transparent layer (I title it Dots) and begin putting in your dots how ever you like. (paint brush, pattern overlay ect.) I chose a dotted pattern from Google to use as a template then used a round paint brush. When I am done I delete the pattern I got from Google. Perfectly spaced dots and no worries about copyright infringement.

3. When you have your dots finished, choose alpha to selection and apply the following settings from your layer effects bevel and emboss menu.

4. After you have applied those settings merge all the dot layers.(Don't merge it with the background just yet.)

5. With your dot layer active, go to blur - gaussian blur and set it to 15

6. Lower the opacity on your dot layer to 75%

7. Merge the dots with the background layer and you are done.

... or you can try this

To make a seamless dot pattern using jeanniem's embossed dot tutorial:

Make a new image 160 x 80. Fill the background with white. Turn off the background visibility. Make a new transparent layer, name it dots.

Image > Grid > Configure Grid
Make grid 40 x 40
View > Show Grid
View > Snap To Grid

Image

Select Ellipse tool

Check Fixed, make Size > 40 x 40

Make an ellipse in the first grid and make sure it's snapped to the grid, fill with white; drag the active ellipse to the next grid as shown in the image and fill with white. Do the same until you have 4 dots filled with white as in the image.

Image

Turn on the Background layer. You will not be able to see the dots as it's the same color as the dots.

Start jeanniem's tutorial at Step 3 by doing alpha to selection to the dots layer.

Your finished seamless pattern will look like this. Use it to fill any sized layer.
