i learned this technique from a tutorial on deviant art shortly before i joined gimp chat and i was completely obsessed by it back then - i made rococo dolls out of all my favourite bollywood actresses and i simplified the technique and added my own tweaks and then forgot about it until i needed a pixie face for a fairy collage. i couldn't find the original tutorial but i was able to remember my own way of doing it and i've tried to write it down in this tutorial. below are some examples of the effect:

edit: having problems with attaching the actual tut, i'll be back!
edit2: and here it is now, in two parts!
edit3: erisian called this "how to turn anyone into britney spears" :hehe

The second picture looks like a Thunderbirds model.

wallace: no big secret, just a bit of work :). in fact, once i got the hang of it, not too much work either, the real job is still extracting them from the background.
2-ton: it is lots of fun!
kimba: i had to look up thunderbirds on the internet - and i thought they looked like my old ken-doll. but i see what you mean, keira would certainly fit in among them :).

I'm thinking of doing your tutorial of this effect on a photo of myself.
:hehe

Thank you AnMal, I've just got your tut and I look forward to doing it soon. It seems to be funny. :)

Don’t be afraid to start over. It’s a new chance to rebuild what you want.

I've enjoyed several of the renders that you posted lately with this look AnMal. Looks to be a cool way to create caricatures too. :)

I think I may have done something that wasn't quite right while doing this tutorial.

wallace: :rofl stick it on your passport, it's much more fun than those dreary mug shots the authorities require! you obviously managed to get through the whole tutorial alive and your result is spot on - does that mean the tutorial is okay, or is there anything i should rewrite?
lylejk: haven't we always known there is something alien about wallace? :hehe about caricatures: yes, since upscaling enhances those details that give a face character this makes excellent charicatures. i had one that i made of kate winslet, but i couldn't find what stick ot was on when i wanted to post it.

The passport photo was the only photo I had of myself that was right for the tutorial. All the other photos were not full frontal or mugshot like.
I guess I must have done it all correctly then. I couldn't find anything that would need to be changed.

Use the apocryphal "area51" script, perhaps :)

Anmal - well sometimes life gives you a little 'reality check' and lets you know that you still have something to learn!

Today I failed miserably in executing your tutorial because it revealed that I had some severe misconceptions about GIMP, its functions and the way it performs. So, one hell of a learning exercise for me and I will try again tomorrow.
But the positive side is that one should never stop learning!! :hi5
