Been toying with converting bitmaps to topological wireframes of late. Below's the steps I used for the Crinkle only result.

ref: http://www.fontplay.com/freephotos/sixt ... 06-042.jpg

First I start with creating the convolution layer (don't have too, but for crinkle only result, it will yield a better result).

I first dup then run G'MIC's bilateral filter on top layer (created a custom preset, but bilateral filter is located under Repair):

I then set the result to Grain Extract; this is your convolution layer:

I then downsize:

Followed by a solid white layer set to 50% opacity (80% opacity if you use straight target image):

Now run the 3D Elevation preset (again used a custom preset but 3D Elevation is located under Rendering)

Create a solid white layer and set to Screen and merge down. Then create a solid black layer (as base layer) and merge down. Adjust contrast and levels until happy. I ran Freaky details as well for my final result.

Lyle you should consider writing this as a new filter in G'MIC (Artistic>Wireframe) :)

Rod, I've already written (with Lyle invitation) the filter, I posted the first result under the topic "Just the clinkers".
I'm waiting upon Lyle to be ready to test it.

Lyle, do you want me to post here the filter I wrote under your tut, in order for you to test it?

Whereever you want to post it Diego. About to have to leave though and won't be back for a little while. Others can beta test too; maybe they will like it as well. My bet is it can all be done withing G'MIC, but, however you decide to do the automation, it will be appreciated. :)

OK, here is the filter in its current status
The output keeps all the layer step by step (unless the user asks to flatten)

Kudos! Lyle.
Could you explain that first step (it's a doozy...) regarding "first create a convolution layer"?

Wazzat? Huhwazzat?

If you'll entertain another:
Wotzitdo? Huhwotsconvolutionactuallydo?

[Ed. removed distractory info regarding fumbling around trying to upgrade G'MIC to a version consistent with instructions.]

under version 1.6.8 you still should find Smooth/Bilateral under Repair (this is the correct name of the filter)

Edit: you find the last version under thread WIREFRAME MAP
pls use the updated version

Thank you, Diego.

I finally visited:
http://gmic.eu/files/linux/
and downloaded the .zip exsociated with my 32-bit Linux platform and extracted gmic_gimp as:
~/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins/gmic_gimp_1.6.8
and moved the other to _1.5.1.3, and created a soft-link to the new one:
% ln -s gmic_gimp_1.6.8 gmic_gimp
and finally refreshed scripts (Filters->ScriptFu->Refresh)

Your advice came just in time.

I went awry at a couple of "interpretations." Here's my attempt to clarify steps (for when I return to this thread in 2021).

Much easier way to create meshes is to use G'MIC's diffusion tensors. I actually discovered that many months ago; don't recall if I ever shared that here or not. Used diffusion tensors again in my recent posts concerning wicker renders. Thought I would just do a rose colored mesh itself this time. :)

That looks exactly like the craft colored burlap type ribbon you see in craft stores!

Thanks, 2-ton. Maybe if I separated the colors and added drop shadow, it could look more realistic, but lazy tonight and I start my weekend shift tomorrow. Maybe I should not pass the torch to samj for future work. She's done some fantastic stuff already for me over the years but especially the recent wicker stuff. :)
