Been toying with converting bitmaps to topological wireframes of late. Below's the steps I used for the Crinkle only result.

First I start with creating the convolution layer (don't have too, but for crinkle only result, it will yield a better result).
I first dup then run G'MIC's bilateral filter on top layer (created a custom preset, but bilateral filter is located under Repair):
I then set the result to Grain Extract; this is your convolution layer:

I then downsize:
Followed by a solid white layer set to 50% opacity (80% opacity if you use straight target image):

Now run the 3D Elevation preset (again used a custom preset but 3D Elevation is located under Rendering)
Create a solid white layer and set to Screen and merge down. Then create a solid black layer (as base layer) and merge down. Adjust contrast and levels until happy. I ran Freaky details as well for my final result.

Lyle you should consider writing this as a new filter in G'MIC (Artistic>Wireframe)

Rod, I've already written (with Lyle invitation) the filter, I posted the first result under the topic "Just the clinkers".
I'm waiting upon Lyle to be ready to test it.

Lyle, do you want me to post here the filter I wrote under your tut, in order for you to test it?

Whereever you want to post it Diego. About to have to leave though and won't be back for a little while. Others can beta test too; maybe they will like it as well. My bet is it can all be done withing G'MIC, but, however you decide to do the automation, it will be appreciated.

OK, here is the filter in its current status
The output keeps all the layer step by step (unless the user asks to flatten)

Here are my results with this image -
I kept everything default.
